Where things took a turn was at the bar. A gentleman suddenly fell hard to the ground. Another guest immediately jumped up to help him, but no staff member stepped in at first. After a moment of struggle, someone from our table went over to assist. The man was clearly very intoxicated.
He then walked toward the bathroom while actively urinating on himself through the restaurant. I wasn’t sure if staff had noticed, so I let the bartender know there was urine all over the floor. She grabbed a mop, without a bucket, and mopped it up, then walked past our table with the dripping mop. It was honestly pretty gross and unsettling.
After that, our food arrived. Shortly after, the same intoxicated man came out of the bathroom, sat back at the bar, and the bartender served him another beer. Later, when I asked if he drove home, she said that he did. which was extremely concerning.
When we went to pay, the internet was down so they couldn’t process payments. Our server didn’t seem to know what to do and kept going to the back to ask the manager for help. He didn’t appear very concerned or eager to assist. After about 30 minutes of us standing at the register trying to pay, he finally came out, took our information so we could return later to pay, and said, “I hope you’re trustworthy people.” That comment felt rude and unnecessary, especially considering we had been patiently waiting to settle our bill.
I understand that unexpected situations happen, but this was not handled well at all. Between the overserving, lack of response to a guest falling, sanitation issues, and poor management support, the experience left a bad impression.
We met here as a halfway point since we live in Naperville and met family in Kempton. The food was what you would expect from a small-town bar and diner. No major complaints there. Our server, Kim, was friendly and doing her best.
About 15 minutes after we arrived, a man fell hard off a barstool. Guests had to help him up because no staff member initially stepped in. He was clearly extremely intoxicated and could not stand without support. As he was helped toward the bathroom, he urinated through the restaurant and attempted to expose himself before being stopped.
We notified staff that there was urine on the floor. The bartender mopped it up without a bucket, then walked past our table with the mop dripping onto the carpet around us. About 10 minutes later, the same man came out still visibly covered in urine, sat back down at the bar, and was served another beer. When he left, we asked if someone picked him up. We were told he drove himself home to the next town.
That is the real issue. He fell, could not stand, urinated in the dining room, was served more alcohol, and then got behind the wheel. Restaurant owners are responsible for how much their patrons are served. Allowing someone in that condition to drive puts lives at risk.
To make matters worse, when we tried to pay, the internet and ATM were down. Kim repeatedly went to the back for help while the owner stayed there. After about 30 minutes of us standing at the register trying to pay, he took our information to call us later and said he hoped we were “trustworthy people.” That felt unnecessary after we had just waited patiently to settle our bill.
Serving someone who cannot stand and then letting them drive is not just poor management. If you over-serve and let people drive home like that, you’re not just running a bar. You’re risking lives.
$55 for 2 of us to eat the buffet that was glorified school cafetatmosphere. I wish I knew the price before we ordered…….that was my fault for not asking. It looked like they had some menu items that could have been better quality food.
Waitress was very nice, and the restaurant was clean with a nice atmosphere.
I haven’t had a bad experience here. They have fantastic onion rings. Not hand battered on site but still good. The chicken parm sandwich was warm and delightful.
Just watch your steaks. They have a new cook and he’s learning still.
COME BY TOM’S PLACE
he’ll take care of you n ur family
