Cuchara, an authentic Mexico City bistro that opened its doors with an above and beyond Mexican independence party on September 15, 2012, occupies the corner space at Fairview and Taft. The 1940s brick building used to house The Hyde Park Supermarket.
The restaurant was conceived by Ana Beaven and Charlie McDaniel.
A collection of eye-catching murals by Mexico City artist Cecilia Beaven are presented throughout the interior and patio.
It has a modern, open aesthetic, which is juxtaposed with jolts of color and texture in the rainbow-hued plates and bowls, and rough-hewn half-aprons worn by waiters that reference the menu’s Mexico City origins.
The one kitchen in town run by women only, delivers delicious authentic dishes never seen in
Bistro serving creative Mexican food & cocktails in a setting brightened with whimsical paintings.

WOW! That was my first thought entering this place. Lively, if not a bit loud for my taste. DJ rocking the spanish music my wife was jamming to. Drinks came out Quick and they were GOOD! The food was aesthetically pleasing and darn DELICIOUS! Yes, they Only offer Valet parking which im not a fan of.. but id rather that than a busted window in midtown. Prices were high for the quantity of food received, but the flavors were authentic and amazing. If you like an upbeat spanish vibe, strong drinks, and amazing food, this is the place to be!

Ordered a variety of plates as we finally had time to stay and try it out without rushing as much. Drinks were nice and strong. Ordered the sopa de tortilla, quesadillas de huitlacoche, chicharrones and the picaditas. Price wise it was way over priced. Food was a bit on the less flavorful side which made sense why a lot of their food was covered in crema but it was still missing that flavor that I love from Mexican food and makes me not miss home as much. The tortilla soup presentation was absolutely beautiful and the flavor was good but it’s not your traditional tortilla soup flavor which I was expecting but none the less it was pretty enjoyable. Last but not least dessert. Dessert was presented as a panadero cart and it just took me a bit back in time to simpler days. If only the dessert took me as well. Had the corn bread and a cajeta filled Concha. Both breads were a bit on the dry side and was again not too impressed. Might come back to give it another try later down the line but so far not fully impressed.

We enjoyed our lunch here tremendously! Very authentic and tasty Mexico City fare. One of the best restaurants in Montrose.
As can be seen from the pix, their restaurant is very nicely decorated in Mexico City style for Christmas .
The mole pork verde entree was very delicious and came with tortillas and various accompaniments.
The tostaditas with chicken appetizer was a very good sized serving and delicious too.
Our waitstaff were very efficient and friendly.

4 Stars – Great Food & Relaxed Vibe
Cuchara has a nice, open setup with plenty of tables, a welcoming bar area, and it’s a great spot for people-watching. I ordered the cucumber drink — refreshing and highly recommended. The chicken enchiladas with green cilantro sauce and the Mexican rice with corn were delicious. But the standout was the Asado de Res Doña Julia ($30)… rich, flavorful, and truly the star of the meal.
Parking can be a bit limited — you can find spots around the block, or use the paid lot across the street for $10. Service was warm and attentive, and I’d definitely come back.
Tip: Don’t leave without trying the cucumber drink and the Asado de Res.
Great taste, great atmosphere — worth the visit.

Cuchara was an amazing experience. The food felt like it was made with love, every dish was delicious and full of flavor. The staff and waiters were incredibly kind, comical, and helpful, which made it feel more like an experience than just a restaurant. I loved the live music and the little carts that came around with additional treats, drinks, and bites to try. If I were a local, I’d definitely be a regular.

I love love love the food here at Cuchara! The steak has some of the best flavor ever — juicy, seasoned perfectly, and cooked exactly right every time. The tostadas are bomb too, super fresh and packed with that authentic taste that hits the spot.
The drinks are strong, just how they should be, and the whole vibe honestly makes me feel like I’m in Mexico. It’s got that fun, colorful energy but still really clean and well-kept inside. The service is solid, the staff is friendly, and the food always comes out tasting amazing.
If you’re looking for a spot with great food, good drinks, and a real authentic feel, this place never misses. I’ll keep coming back!

I’ve been to this place several times over the last decade. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is great. This is a good place to hang out with friends, celebrate a special occasion or brunch on the weekends. The carajillos and micheladas are money. The food is a bit pricey but it’s a nice treat. Be ready to spend $40+ per person for food plus alcohol. They offer valet parking, free parking is also available around the establishment but it’s hard to find, especially on weekends.
