TO LIVE AND FRY IN L.A. In 2017, four childhood friends came up with a simple concept — take Nashville Hot Chicken and make it better than anyone else in America. With only a couple thousand dollars to their name, they boot-strapped a pop-up concept in a parking lot in East Hollywood serving a simple menu of tenders, sliders, fries, and kale slaw — they created a viral cult following with lines consistently over an hour long.

As soon as I got to the counter, the employee handing out orders turned away and ignored me as if I wasn’t there. Eventually, we made eye contact, and I was told that my order was not ready even though it was marked as ready on the screen. I was then told it would be another five minutes, in addition to the 15 extra minutes I had already waited.
At that point, I realized this location seems to prioritize DoorDash orders and customers who order at the counter. My order was nothing complicated, yet people who ordered after I arrived were receiving their food before I did.
This was my second visit to this location and unfortunately, the service has gotten worse. As a result of today’s experience, I will not be giving this location another chance for a while.
P.S. Please turn the music down. There is no need for it to be blasting.
The Food
While there is a lot of talk about the “Reaper” spice level, I had no desire to “die” today! I ordered Dave’s #3 (one tender and one slider with fries) along with a strawberry lemonade slushie. The tender is served with sliced bread, pickles, and Dave’s sauce, while the slider comes with kale slaw, pickles, and sauce. I chose to test both the “Hot” and “Medium” heat levels.
The Experience
Since it was opening day, they were still working out some bugs; it took about 13 minutes to receive my meal. The “Hot” spice is a powdered rub that is deep-fried onto the chicken. It was tolerable, but I have no desire to exceed that level of heat. The “Medium,” however, was quite enjoyable. The meal was well-packaged and came with plenty of sauce for the fries. The fries themselves had a light dusting of spice that wasn’t overly hot or salty.
The Value
My meal cost $20.59. As a 65-year-old, I tend to compare that price point against other meals of similar value. I’m a bit of a “happy hour connoisseur,” and for $20, I can usually get a large chicken salad and a pint of beer for less than the cost of this combo. Plus, the salad usually leaves me feeling a bit healthier than deep-fried food.
Tipping
This is a fast food facility. Dont ask for a tip when all you do is press a button on a keypad. Please dont make this a normal process. 4 stars due to tipping request.
The Verdict
Well, I tried it! Will I go back? Only time will tell.
Improvement
Dont have the receipt on the inside of the food container. The paper and ink are not of food grade. See the attached photo.
Review response
Honestly, your reply to my review wasn’t genuine. Total boiler plate reply. The food is really only 3 stars.
the food was worth the wait for me ill be coming back for the crispy cauliflower sandwich to try next time.
The slider first: Sauce complimented the chicken well and the slaw gave it a great balance without making the whole ensemble a dripping mess. At the Extra Hot level it was quite enjoyable, not too spicy for me, it did not cause any sweating or tears.
The tender comes second. I dip into the provided sauce. The heat for Reaper isn’t initially there but it built as I was 3/4 of the way through. I was able to finish it without taking a break. It was hot but not the hottest hot chicken I’ve ever had. The waiver is a bit dramatic but I understand CYA. It will certainly give ring sting later but it didn’t floor me.
Will definitely come back, excited to have a hot chicken place so close now.
I am vegetarian and ordered the plant based NOT chicken (cauliflower) and was told he wasn’t sure if they were ready to serve it. Upon checking with the kitchen, the associate and the kitchen staff went back and forth and the associate told the kitchen worker he needed to “make more anyways”. I was able to order it but with it making up 50% of the menu, this should probably always be available no question..
Fries were great, cauliflower/not chicken was amazing!
Music was randomly SUPER LOUD, it was good playlist but it definitely needs to come down so people can hear each other inside
Staff is friendly, service seems a little slow.
