Landed hungry and ready to eat all the way from Texas. I got the mixed plate, ribs,ham, and beef. All were unique i like the beef the most, ham second, and ribs 3rd. Tough ribs , just had an expectation of fall off the bone and it was super stuck on the bone. I enjoyed the service and just the quality of service. All staff very friendly and accommodating. I’d recommend stopping in, the beef and ham definitely are worth it. Fries they are filling they are not shy about the fries and if you ask for the seasoning it’s getting it on everything.

Burnt ends taste good. A bit hard to understand the menu.
Soft drink size is too big to finish for me.
Pickle was too salty. I only ate couple and couldn’t finish it.
The meat was very delicious.

Everything was amazing! We had a beef Nooner and a chicken link all under $30. The service was incredible. The staff was so friendly and helped us pick what to order and checked on us throughout our meal. Their best kept secret is chicken wings. You must buy their sauces and rubs. This was an awesome experience!

What made the visit even more memorable was the exceptional customer service provided by Ms. Shipley. She was warm, professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Her kindness and care made the experience feel personal and special, and it’s clear she takes great pride in providing top-tier service.
From the quality of the food to the outstanding hospitality, everything was five-star. I highly recommend Gates BBQ to anyone looking for amazing barbecue and customer service that goes above and beyond. I will absolutely be back!

Wanted to try Gates as a staple heritage KC BBQ spot, had heard good things, but unfortunately was not up to the hype. Ordered short end ribs, 1/2 chicken, burnt end sandwich and sides. Coleslaw, mac, onion rings. You wait a while in line for staff to yell at you (sort of in a nice way) and then your orders aloud to the kitchen. Very hectic type environment. You order, wait then put food on a tray then you pay. It was pricey for the quality, and type of service which is more diner style than restaurant. At $75 I expected more. The heavy handed ladle of sauce over everything is unfortunately too much. It’s a tomato heavy bbq sauce and it just overpowers the meat. The burnt ends were chopped up so fine, the flavor was all lost. The only thing I would order again was the 1/2 chicken that was awesome, I would just get it without sauce (or on the side) so you can control the portion. The coleslaw was good, they sprinkle seasoning on it and it was good. Mac n cheese was a little dry. The dining room was cute and the pickles were good, but unfortunately I likely wouldn’t come again for the price and quality.

I got the nooner sandwich with fries. It was pretty good. I’ve always remembered the food here as spectacular and not just pretty good. It’s been a while and it seems like in the midst of so much competition, Gates doesn’t stick out anymore.

Frankly if I could give a zero I would.. my food was absolutely horrible. The wings were old and dry. The ribs were cold and nothing but fat. I threw the whole meal away. I spent 40 dollars. I emailed customer service and still haven’t received a response back. I refuse to spend my money on food that look like this.

Overall good barbecue! Definitely easy to overindulge. This was my introduction to kansas city barbecue and its definitely distinct from the texas barbecue I am used to but the flavors are there. Burnt ends mac and cheese was my favorite item we got. Would go back if I am ever in KC again.

Got mixed plate. Wanted different mix of meats but choice was limited. Ribs were very good but cold. Large cut fries also good. Good sliced ham and beef but had better in Texas. Coleslaw was tasty but too much mayo. Plate is too much for one person. Enough food for two

Absolute trash. We pulled up, can’t get a parking spot because folks are parked right in front of the building getting food to go and no one can get out of the parking lot. This place is supposed to be a cornerstone of the Kansas City community but when you finally get in line, they say “HOW CAN I HELP YOU” in the most sarcastic way. Then the cook actually walks out because of the front of the house was yelling at him big time. Then when I take my meal to house it is dry as grandma’s skin and unchewable……I’ll just suck it up and wait in a different bbq line.
