This was our first time, we love to check out the non-chain restaurants. The physical appearance is less than desired with stains on ceiling tiles, torn screens, menu (paper in a very worn plastic cover). Otherwise the floor was clean, tables were clean. The wait staff were wonderful and indeed kept drinks filled. The first round of coffee was good.
My husband had biscuits and gravy which he said was good, and his eggs were good. Bacon not sure.
I had the ham and cheese omelet. See the picture. White bread toast was only option. Grits were good, not seasoned, and not sure homemade.
From previous reviews it seems this place may have slipped some. We will not be returning.

A real old school diner, with southern diner food. The eggs are classic, the sausage almost melts in your mouth, the gravy tastes homemade. The stars of my breakfast were the grits and biscuits. The grits were perfectly cooked and seasoned and the biscuits were soft and buttery. Reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking and that’s saying something. I highly recommend this place, but be warned, this isn’t no fancy breakfast place or gimmick diner. This is the real deal.

Great breakfast and lunch. They have the biggest pancakes I’ve ever seen! You can’t beat the prices. Service was A+. I’ve been eating here since I was a kid. I highly recommend it!

Excellent food amd service. 1st time here and will be back many more times! Drinks were never empty and waitress always checked on me. The cook is outstanding on the quality food he is putting out while the house is almost full of guests.
Thank you! See you soon!

Your standard diner/ breakfast fare. Staff were very nice and service was pretty quick for how busy it was. The food is actually cheap for what you get. $5-6 for a standard breakfast. Cooked exactly as requested. If we find ourselves in the area we will give it another try.

Wanted to try this place for years, but it looked sketchy. Finally found a group who would go, and boy am I glad. Hamburgers at 6 am, customized the way to like them, tots so hit they melted porcelain plates, friendly service and SUPER cheap prices. And!!! and!!! They had a payphone!

I am having breakfast in this little cafe with all the old men on the south east side of Chattanooga.
A fellow fell on the side walk on the way in. His friends and his usual server went out to help him up. They had a cup of coffe waiting at his table.
No one made a fuss. It was clear that they were aware of his pride. I heard a few folks murmur that he had had a stoke a couple of weeks ago. His wife died at Christmas.
He’s been coming in here to have coffee for 20 years. Ever since he had retired.
The Hungry House been a local favorite for 37 years.
I love places like this. I love meeting locals. If you are ever in Chattanooga skip all the trendy skinny jean’s restaurants downtown and head on over to the local greasy spoon.

It’s definitely like going back in time. I ordered a veggie omelette. I got a ham cheese and veggie omelette and short order cook to offense when I wouldn’t eat it. He snatched the plate out from under me as I was eating the toast. The wait staff walked on egg shells so as not to upset him further during his conniption fit. Time clearly has stood still but customer service should always be vogue. I won’t be a patron again. Do better! Or give a care.. pick either just pick one.
