4 Stars – Delicious Food, But Pricey

The food was served piping hot, fresh, and very flavorful, with quick preparation and attentive service. The atmosphere is definitely a highlight, located right on the ocean with both indoor seating and a covered outdoor area that’s especially enjoyable when the weather cooperates. It’s a beautiful spot to sit back, relax, and take in the views. One drawback is that the menu did not list any prices, which made the final bill a bit of a surprise. The meals are quite expensive, though that’s not unexpected in a remote, touristy spot like Hoonah. Overall, a great place to enjoy a tasty meal in a scenic setting, just be prepared for higher costs.

Ordered the halibut fish and chips for lunch. The fries were hot and fresh—shared these with family and were instantly devoured. The fish was good. I didn’t especially care for the batter on the fish—had a chewy not crispy texture for some reason. The reindeer chili tasted good. It leans toward the rich/heavy side. The cheese and onions on top were yummy and fresh.

During our stop at Icy Strait Point aboard Radiance of the Seas, my wife and I had the pleasure of dining at The Cookhouse—and it was easily one of the best meals we’ve had during our trip. After a casual 20-30 minute walk from the ship, we arrived at this charming spot, passing by some interesting historical attractions along the way. The walk itself added to the experience, giving us a real sense of the local history and beauty before even sitting down to eat.

Now, let’s talk about the food—starting with the halibut fish and chips I ordered, which was hands down some of the best I’ve ever had. And I’ve had fish and chips in London, so that’s saying something! The halibut was fresh, flaky, and cooked to perfection with a crisp, golden batter that wasn’t too heavy. My wife opted for the cod fish and chips, and she couldn’t stop raving about how delicious and perfectly seasoned it was. Both meals were served piping hot and with just the right amount of crunch on the fries.

One surprise highlight was the reindeer chili—something you don’t see every day. If you’ve never had it, I highly recommend giving it a try. Where else can you get reindeer chili? It was hearty, flavorful, and had just the right amount of spice. Definitely something unique that added to the authentic Alaskan experience.

The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. With its casual vibe and high-quality food, The Cookhouse definitely stands out as a must-visit spot in Icy Strait.

Whether you’re a seafood lover or just looking for a unique Alaskan dish, I’d highly recommend The Cookhouse. It’s not just a meal; it’s part of the Icy Strait experience and well worth the visit.

The famous halibut and chips were soooo good! We also had their cheeseburger, which was great as well! Wasn’t busy, went towards 5pm, staff very nice! Plus, you’re right by the water with amazing views of the water, mountains then the kids can go play by the water when they finish and see a ton of starfish!

We enjoyed a delicious plate of fish and chips and a massive, juicy burger out on their front porch. Service was fast and the food was very good, yes it is pricey but this is a pretty remote location where food can only come in by ferry and seaplane, so when you consider that it is pretty good deal.

This had to be one of our best meals. View and food and nice people. The halibut fish n chips is a must if you love halibut. Would definitely eat there anytime and highly recommend. Absolutely worth getting off the ship just for the food. Even if you are at the wilderness landing dock, they have a short tram so you dont have to walk much at all. The views are unreal. We even had a humpback come up right by the shore showing off for everyone.

Grabbed a chorizo breakfast burrito here on an early port day. It was so hot and delicious. Super fresh and totally hit the spot. This place was dead in the morning but by lunch, it was absolutely packed. (Everyone was coming in and asking about their fish and chips so I am sure it’s a must-get). The staff was very friendly and would definitely get it again.

We ate here for lunch this afternoon (6/1/23) and it was excellent! I so wish that I could bring the halibut & chips back w/ us to Ohio. I can’t tell begin to tell you how good the fish was. Fresh off the boat is no lie…our entire family loved this place during our cruise. Definitely a must-do while you’re visiting ISP/Hoonah. Employees were friendly & welcoming. Well worth the $$$!

While the fish was amazing, I don’t understand how we got to around $80 for 1 order of fish n chips, a small cup of chowder, a small cup of reindeer chili, and 2 beers. Pretty pricey, folks! I guess that’s what you get when you don’t ask. They don’t want any prices on the menu.
