After a long day of whale watching (and fighting off a touch of seasickness), we decided to eat at the first place we saw when we docked — The Fish House Grill. Big mistake.

Once seated, we waited what felt like geological time for anyone to acknowledge our existence. When the food finally arrived, it barely justified the patience — or the price tag.

The clams were the saving grace — genuinely tasty and perfectly cooked, giving the meal a faint pulse of redemption.

In short: great location, mediocre food, premium prices, and service that seemed to be on its own break.

When you’re with a big group and a toddler in Bar Harbor, finding a spot with no wait is a huge win, and that’s exactly why we chose Fish House Grill. With a 40-minute wait at another spot, we were happy to be seated right away. We were a party of seven, and most of us ordered lobster and seafood dishes. I went with the Lazy Lobster, hoping for a hassle-free meal. While the portion was decent, the food didn’t quite hit the mark for freshness and flavor that you’d expect from a Maine seafood spot. Our bill came to over $300, which felt a bit steep for the overall quality of the meal. It’s a convenient option if you need to get in and out quickly, but I’d suggest exploring other places in the area for a more authentic and high-quality seafood experience.

Really great lobster and you eat outside under umbrella picnic tables. My Amazing Lazy Man Lobster was so good. Oysters, Haddock were also awesome. Great staff. Great outside deck into the harbor.

Great little spot on the water. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Lobster bisque was more on the creamy side than the lobster-chunk side. Clams, muscles, and oysters were fresh, drinks refreshing and atmosphere great. Mussel broth was a bit salty.

Super convenient, right at the dock where Bar Harbor whale watch tours leave depart. Outdoor seating, as well as open air indoor seating, and a bar available.

Service was fast and our waitress. Natalie was super sweet. The menu has a pretty decent variety. You can get all types of seafood as well as burgers, Philly cheesesteak, and chicken tenders.

First impression was terrible, looking for a nice meal on the water and being greeted by a woman who looked genuinely offended at our presence; AirPod in no smile and seemed completely disinterested in her job. The food was decent but the price was definitely above average. The shrimp were chewy and flavorless, the haddock and flounder however were highlights of the meal.

The fish house was a solid lunch option for my wife and I. We started off with the calamari. I had a full rack of ribs with red potatoes and corn on the cob. My wife had the crab roll. Overall, the ribs beat my expectations for an ocean town. The corn was the only disappointment but its corn so… we ended lunch with the blueberry pie which was the best id ever had. I cant stress how good it was. Hint do not get cream or ice cream on it.

Food was good. Quick service and the view from outside is great. Prices better than a lot of places in town.

For Oct. 11- Fish House Grill is a fun place to go see “the Bar Harbor show” and enjoy some fresh seafood eats while you’re at it. We had a grand time people and activity watching from our seaside perch. We went with the FHG Fish Tacos and Haddock Sandwich which were both tasty and very good. The Bar Island Ice Teas we had went down nicely. Very much recommended.

For reference: I am traveling via a cruiseline and arrived to the restaurant on foot; opinions based off my normal experiences in SC and I cannot provide info on parking

I’m surprised that this place doesn’t have higher reviews, and some of the 1 star reviews seem unnecessarily harsh. The food was absolutely amazing and a highlight of our day. We got the clam chowder, lobster bisque, chicken tenders (buffalo style), meat sandwich (kind of like a Philly Cheese Steak), and the blueberry pie. Honestly, this place helped me realize my love for clam chowder and I was told by my father that the lobster bisque was some of the best he’d ever had. My fiancé loved the sandwich (I stole a few bites and was impressed) as the meat wasn’t dry, though, I would’ve liked a little more cheese or maybe some mayo. The fries were also very good. The best part for my group was the blueberry pie (I’m not big into sweets) with the blueberry icecream. Pricing was pretty on-par with the area, I think. We had a poor experience with lobster at a different restaurant the previous stop (also Maine) so we avoided ordering similar food. I will say that my only complaint was the staff, as they weren’t necessarily friendly nor unfriendly, just sort of bland. But I suppose you go out to eat for the food, not the staff. The location was perfect, too – right next to the seaport to get back on our ship. Overall, if we visit again we’ll definitely go back!
