For some reason, every time I come, the tables are sticky…
I actually love their general Tao chicken, however other things seems to be just okay.
Happy with my iced coffee.
Crab rangoons are delicious.
Nothing to stand from the roof tops and shout about. But a decent meal, for competitive prices. Happy to have in Altoona, Iowa!

The Tom Kai Ka soup the best I’ve had since Thailand. We have eaten here before and tried number of different dishes and have been impressed with freshness and taste. The lettuce wraps we tried on this trip and was quite good.

My husband and I were in Altoona to get pedicures at our favorite salon spa Signatures.

While we were getting our pedicures we were talking about where we could go and eat some delicious Chinese and Altoona and we asked the people that were doing our pedicures where they would recommend.

The very first thing out of both of their mouths was to go to Thai Basil which was just down the street from the salon.

We looked it up. Got in the car. Mapped our way there and as soon as we got there we were greeted very nicely and quickly by the girl at the front desk.

We got seated and before we even got sat down, our waitress was at our table asking us what we would like to drink and bringing us the menus.

She returned with our drinks and took our order for our appetizers and while we were looking at the menus to figure out what we wanted for our entrees she brought our appetizers out.

We had the fried wontons and the fried potstickers and my husband and I both decided that they were some of the best ones that we have ever had and we have traveled many many places and had many different options.

The waitress was right on point coming back and checking on us regularly. She had a smile every time. Very very kind, very efficient and always brought what we asked. Came back to refill our drinks. She was just an excellent waitress.

I had the Mongolian beef and the beef was some of the most tender beef that I have ever had in a Chinese food dish before and my husband had the sesame chicken which was very perfectly crispy and the best sauce ever.

My husband also had a Des Moines roll that was sushi. I can tell you that the serving size is there are double wherever you’re going to get them and the price is about half.

The restaurant was also very clean. It smelled good in there. Everything was set up nice. It had good Decor. I would not hesitate for a minute to go back to this place.

Highly highly recommend going here. You would not be disappointed

My daughter wanted Asian Cusine for her birthday. We had never been to Thai Basil, but decided to try it based on the reviews. We were not disappointed! Nathan, our server, was very friendly and helpful. He seemed to really enjoy his job and brightened the evening. We started with the Crab Ragoon, Samosas, and a California Sushi Roll: all 3 excellent. The sushi roll was fresh and light. The crab ragoon was real crab, full of flavor and filling.
We had 2 kids’ Pad Thai, 1 Beef Noodles, 1 Curry Noodles, 1 Pineapple Fried Rice, and a Kids Honey Chicken. We truly sampled everything and it was delicious, authentic, and cooked well. Kids meals were large.
Since it was my daughter’s birthday, Nathan came out with an adorable Birthday Dessert for all to share!

One of the top Asian restaurants in the Des Moines area. Been here a handful of times and never left disappointed. Tried a new dish each time and always excellent.
The crab-fried rice dish is by far one of my favorites.

Great Thai food! My husband and I dined in for lunch. He had the special yellow curry (aka Khao soi) and I had Pad Thai (spice level 2) We also shared an app of fried pork pot stickers. All of the food was delicious and just the right amount of spicy! Portions were generous. We left with enough food to have dinner later that day. Worth mentioning, we ordered orange chicken for pickup previously and it was decent but the Thai food is the real star of the show here. The new owners are doing a great job!

Delicious!!! I had the yellow curry stir fry and the altoona roll. Both soooooo good. Enough for 2 or 3 big meals, too.

Friendly prompt service. Clean space.

Cost was $30 with tip. For the quality and amount, that seemed right on.

Their menu has so many things I wanted to try. I can see this becoming a regular go to.

I asked for medium spice level and also feel like they delivered.

Thanks Cool Basil!

I have ordered from here twice in the last 8 years I have lived in Altoona. Not the best but definitely will do in a pinch when I have a craving and don’t want to drive to West Des Moines. My go to dish is Basil Fried Rice with Beef. Sadly both times I have ordered this dish, the second time being tonight, the rice was not really fried but more like soft mush, probably means they are frying freshly cooked rice instead of rice that has been refrigerated. The beef also seemed to be boiled and thrown in to heat up in the pan instead of fried. My wife’s dish was Pad Thai with chicken but they used shrimp instead. She liked it despite it being wrong. She even says the it is the most tender shrimp she has ever had. Overall, like I said, not the best but works in a pinch. Still good enough that I’ll probably use them again.

Had the Birthday sushi roll! Simply delicious. Fresh and quality ingredients. The server was extremely sweet and attentive. Boba was a bit hard (might’ve been a little uncooked) not as chewy as I like it but still good. Fortune cookie was so cute way better taste than the original Chinese cookie.

Hands down my favorite place for sushi, Crab Rangoon and chicken fried rice! The portions are nice and big, the rice for the sushi is the perfect chewy (not mushy) texture AND the size of the sushi roll for the Des Moines Roll is HUGE!

The crab ragoons are the perfect balance of savory, sweet with a slight spicy kick and on top of that it is fried to perfection where its not too hard but has the perfect semi soft center with a nice crunch around the edge.

The chicken fried rice is cooked to perfection as well with the texture of the rice and seasoning of the chicken.

Absolutely love this place and totally recommend it!
