Our server, Emilio Gonzalez, was not attentive throughout the evening. Each time we tried to call him over, he was unavailable, and even something as simple as asking for water took an excessive amount of time. This left us feeling overlooked and frustrated.
In addition, we noticed that the menu had changed, and the food portions seemed noticeably smaller compared to our past visits. While this was disappointing, the most concerning part of our experience was the service charge. An 18% service fee was automatically added to our bill even though we were only a party of four. We believe tipping should reflect the quality of service received, and in this case, we were not given the opportunity to tip accordingly.
We have enjoyed Kalaveras in the past, but this experience left us very dissatisfied. I hope you will review these concerns so that other guests do not have the same experience in the future.

Recently returned and I am happy to say we received the same level of High quality service! Or even better! Our server David was so attentive, friendly and welcoming! Made sure we had everything we needed and checked on us often. We Tried the fresh guacamole appetizer comes served in a beautiful tradicional mexican bowl and It was delicious! So glad to have come back!
It is so nice when I come upon restaurants that really strive to offer quality food and service! It’s a new place that hasn’t had a grand opening yet, but has been open for a couple of weeks. The brightly calavera paintings on the outside building caught our attention as we drove on 3rd Ave. You are Immediately greeted with a beautiful mural of Frida in the entrance. We were seated right away, it is very spacious and has a dark art vibe! They have a long bar, plenty of tables and booths. Fernanda was our waitress. She was very attentive and showed us the happy hour menu and lunch specials. We ordered the potato tacos and barbacoa plate. They were so flavorful and had all the authentic Mexican seasonings!! The presentation was perfect and very detailed! Our glasses were kept full and we were given everything we needed. Every server that passed checked on us. I hope this place maintains the quality of service for a long while. They are a chain further north but this is the first one in San Diego. If this level of food and service continues I will be a regular Monday margaritas $5!! They have great specials! Taco Tuesday and Sunday brunch buffet!
