Found this place by chance while looking for South Indian/Hyderabadi biryani on Google maps. It is exclusively a takeout/delivery place. Their menu is extensive: from South Indian breakfast items to Biryanis and plenty of vegetarian as well as non vegetarian options.
We ordered the Vijaywada Boneless Biryani and Mangalore Mutton Ghee Roast – wanted to keep it minimal to test the waters. Delivery took about an hour which was perfect. Both dishes were absolutely lip smacking good and authentic – I have been to Hyderabad several times as well as have friends who belong to the namesake place called Vijaywada who have generously cooked similar meals for me.
If this doesn’t scratch your itch for South Indian food especially Biryani, then I don’t know what will!
TL;DR: Most authentic Andhra food I’ve had in the States so far. No contest.
We got the Vijaywada boneless chicken biryani, the Avakaya chicken biryani, Amaravati chicken curry, Bangalore Benne dosa, and Vada. I recommend all of them.
The Vijaywada biryani is an all-rounder. It is served with Mirch ka salan, raita, onions and lime.
The Avakaya biryani has a lot of strong flavor coming in through the mango pickle.
The Amaravati curry is a heavily spiced tomato-based curry.
The vada and dosa were great. I didn’t like the sambar quite as much, but the chutney was great.
I recently needed to place a large order, and their service truly stood out. They were incredibly responsive via both phone and WhatsApp, thoughtfully walking me through options and even recommending dispatching their own delivery driver (instead of a third-party app) because of the order size. That level of care made a big difference and everything arrived packaged perfectly.
While I’ve loved everything I’ve tried, special props go to the lemon rice, the lighter-than-air idlis, and the Madras filter coffee, which is pure comfort in a cup. Reliable, delicious, and genuinely thoughtful service, Vijayawada Mess is a gem.
The ghee roast pulao was another standout rich, aromatic, and full of flavor. The ghee added a wonderful depth, and the dish felt comforting yet indulgent.
The Chicken Mandi was a real highlight smoky, juicy, and full of flavor. The portion size was generous, and it had the perfect balance of spices and tenderness, making it a must-try for anyone.
Thanks for providing what you say. First time in Philly you can enjoy multiple varieties without compromise.
