I went here on Valentine’s Day with my girlfriend and it was the perfect date night spot. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic even with the Valentine’s Day crowd. The sushi was super fresh and flavorful. My favorite is the Pink Angel roll and it never disappoints. Everything came out quickly and tasted amazing. We had a great time and will definitely be back!

Let me set the scene for everyone. Me and my significant others, yes I said significant others, went out for Valentine’s Day date. We had been to this restaurant before but did not expect the terrible service we received that night. Firstly, we were met with 10 minutes of waiting for a table that was completely open, set, and unreserved. Then, we received a waitress that couldn’t even understand my basic order. Then, we proceeded to wait 40 minutes for our first appetizer (Rock Shrimp). Then after another 25 mins, we received our next appetizer (Shrimp Tempura). Also, we did not receive a plate or cutlery for any of these appetizers. Then, we waited another hour to get our food. Guess what, the food was terrible. You would think a somewhat reputable place such as this would have good service, and some good food. Absolutely disgusting and I don’t ever plan on coming back here. If you are looking for food on a holiday (or maybe even just a Saturday night) do not come here. Better yet, stay as far away as you can from this establishment. I recommend you go anywhere else but here.

I have been to this restaurant many times and have always considered it one of my favorites. I’ve consistently had good experiences here in the past.
Unfortunately, today was completely different. The food was very disappointing — the meat was cold and lacked seasoning, and the ribeye was unlike anything I’ve ever been served here before. It was far below the usual standard of this restaurant.
I politely called the waitress and explained the situation, letting her know that the food was not good. However, nothing was done to properly resolve the issue. The only thing offered was ice cream, even though I clearly explained that the problem was with the main course.
I was extremely disappointed, especially because this was a special occasion for my husband and me. We were celebrating an important day, and he kindly chose this restaurant because he knows it’s my favorite. Sadly, the experience was frustrating and upsetting for both of us.
I truly hope the restaurant looks into what happened, as I’ve always had a great impression of this place — but this time, I left very disappointed.

I had a great experience at Kanji Steakhouse and Sushi. The food was fresh and tasty, with a wide selection on the menu that made it easy to find something for everyone. The restaurant was very clean and well-kept. The service was quick and efficient, and the prices were reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. I’ll definitely be coming back!

After reading a review in the Asbury Park Press, I decided to try Kanji. I did not sit on the Hibachi side. I began my meal with a soup. Crab & Corn Chowder. NEVER AGAIN! Flavor was simple disappointing. The ‘crab’ was imitation!!! No where in the menu did it indicate that this was fake crab. I ate 1 spoonful and never touched it again. I was so disappointed to find that a large portion of the house special sushi rolls was tempura fried. Not what I was looking for but that is their right to decide the menu. I ordered a couple of sushi rolls. No complaints about the fish, it seemed fresh. However the flavor was not my favorite. I ate the rolls then asked staff about the alleged ‘Crab’ & Corn Chowder. They confirmed that it was imitation crab. I politely advised that I was expecting real crab as the menu didn’t indicate otherwise. My server then relayed my message to a supervisor or manager, who came over and asked if there was an issue with the Chowder. I repeated my concern. The Mgr repeated that it is not real crab asked if i wanted a different soup, i declined stating that i was just in the mood for the crab chowder. She walked away. I decided to wait to see the bill, i was surprised to see no attempt to comp the Chowder or address my concern, their shortcomings I CAN NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT to anyone.

The restaurant is well appointed and designed establishment. We were large group of parents and children which we occupied a private room and had 3 Hibachi Chefs. A few guests had ordered shrimp for their entrees and the raw cleaned shrimp was placed on the griddle; immediately an innocuous odor of bad shrimp overcame a couple of guests and we made comments that the shrimp was bad. I discretely went to the manager; spoke privatelywith her in the vestibule to explain that the shrimp was rancid. The manager began to explain that they use a vast amount of frozen shrimp and it couldn’t possibly be bad. The manager returned shortly thereafter and spoke with the Hibachi Chef in their language. She began to explain that it was lemon juice. Next the Hibachi Chef began to explain that it was the smell seafood. The Hibachi Chef continued to cook the shrimp and douse them with whatever sauces. We explained, “This wasn’t the smell of fresh seafood but rather rancid seafood.” A fellow dining guest explained that we know what is fresh and what isn’t. The situation that resulted is that as a guests we were made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, and being served tainted food.
While the shrimp was removed from the bill and a few other items. The net result you made a scene among 32 people. The manager and chef should know how to properly handle a situation and not serve food that is rancid!

We have been dining here since Covid hit. Awesome family owned business with great food, pleasant atmosphere, extensive menu (I’ve never made a bad choice but my go-to is the Pink Angel) . We are still here every Monday and holidays when we’re in town. 10

TLDR: Good food, great atmosphere.
We ordered sushi and hibachi, both were very good! The sweet potato roll in particular was very good. The smoked salmon roll was alright, nothing to brag about though (probably won’t be ordering again). The spring rolls were excellent! The hibachi vegetable was good. It wasn’t too salty which was nice, and the noodles and rice were both cooked well. The cucumber roll was good, nothing special though. The place was very clean, but smelled slightly like chlorine—almost like we were at an indoor pool or something. The atmosphere was very good; nice dim lighting and soft music made the experience enjoyable. Overall, great Japanese place in the Shrewsbury area. I’d recommend coming here for dinner.

I lived in NYC for about 12 years and when I moved to NJ I was very disappointed to not find good sushi in the area. I found Kanji and I have already been there 3 times. I try the Chinese food, the Hibachi and the sushi and all very impressive. Finally something worth to eat out in the area.
