My wife and I decided to try a new place around the area and came across this location. The place looked interesting and was in a very cute hole in the wall but the food was slightly disappointing. We also got seated at the “high top” but when we arrived it was literally a high table in the corner beside the washroom with barely any room to sit or a place to hang our coats.

We waited over an hour and a half after ordering just to have our main course served. I wouldn’t say it was the service that’s the problem, it’s the one man chef going at it all by himself in the kitchen. He looked like he was about to break any moment.

We ordered the oyster Rockefeller , a salmon dish, and a burger. The Rockefeller was mushy and the cream has separated making it taste soggy. I thought the salmon was alright and the burger was mediocre at best.

For the price of the food, I would say they could have done a bit better.

Reservation is a must because it is a VERY small place to dine in.

And for the sake of the chef, PLEASE hire some help for that poor man.

I travel a lot for work by car in Ontario. I like to look for restaurants that aren’t part of a restaurant chain. I stumbled upon beyond the gate and I loved it. The restaurant is small six tables and a very comforting atmosphere. Nice music was playing while the smells from the kitchen took hold I was only stopping for lunch and had no reservation. The corn chowder was amazing and the queso fundido was perfect and very filling. I immediately sent messages to several friends who passed through occasionally. A dinner reservation is required to give the chef ample notice to prepare and have on hand fresh fruit. I can’t say enough good things about the lunch I just had..

In a time where everyone is so eager to throw away quality and experience for the convenience of unhealthy fast foods, its unfortunate that Beyond The Gate is sometimes overlooked. If youre fortunate enough to book yourself a reservation, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I’ve been going to Freddy’s restaurant for a few years now with friends and family. Every meal has been fantastic! The service is excellent and the Chef is phenomenal. The atmosphere in the dining room is simple, clean and comforting. Theres lots of exciting things on the menu for any palate.

If youre looking for a place that uses quality ingredients, served in a fashion that you’ve probably only seen on the food network, Beyond the Gate is the place to go. If youre giving Pizza Pizza and McDonalds 5 star reviews on Google, youre better off to keep eating your big macs and cardboard flavored pizza.

Keep it up Chef Freddy!
Well be back!

Having dined here in the past, and having had a good experience, we recommended Beyond The Gate Restaurant to friends of ours that had invited us out to dinner.
Reservations were a breeze, & the entire experience was superb!
Our server Dominiqua, cared for us intently.
The menu was varied, with great selections available.
Drinks, appetizers, all excellent, but our entrees were amazing!
Chef Freddy is a master, right down to the Crepes Suzette, served flambé at our table.
After dinner liqueurs & coffee, we’re the icing on the cake.
Such a refreshing experience overall.
For a most pleasant & satisfying gourmet French cuisine experience, (within an hour of Toronto or Collingwood), I would highly recommend Beyond The Gate Restaurant.
Reservations recommended.

Randomly picked a little town coming from Saugeen beach, stopped at this beautiful restaurant with my partner. Looks like family owned nice business. Food was delicious, tasted fresh and made with love literally :D. 100% recommended, for sure will stop by for the good food every time we pass by.

A lovely quaint restaurant with outstanding food. I consider myself a foodie and it takes a lot to impress me. Every course was delicious and perfectly seasoned. I had the tomato and goat cheese tart as well as the beef tenderloin which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and had delicious crispy shaved Brussels sprouts accompanying it. My husband had the tuna tartar and the St. Jaques (scallops) he say he would order the scallops again in a heartbeat. We shared the butter tart crepe for dessert. I love a good butter tart but often find the filling too sweet. This filling was well balanced and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The chef stopped us on our way out to check how our meal was and was so friendly. More people need to discover this restaurant!

@beyond_the_gate and Chef Fred is AMAZING! We got there early so we could linger and enjoy each course and my goodness is he gifted. All of the flavours are absolutely perfect and he sources his ingredients locally so when you go- you’re fully supporting Canadian and you’re going to love every morsel!

️ Antipasto – Assorted Local Charcuterie (Cheese from Quebec)
️ St Jacques – Scallops, Double Smoked Bacon, Peppers, Mushrooms and Garlic Butter Sauce*
️ Shrimp Scampi – Bok Choy, Peppers, Tomatoes, Garlic Wine Buttery Sauce*
️ Strawberry Crêpe with a hint of Herbes de Provence*

*Warning – you’ll want to lick your plate with every dish – Chef Fred is an incredibly talented Saucier

The restaurant is located in the beautiful @town_shelburne where you’ll also find @lebistrodupain new location, @museumofdufferin and a little further out is @k2milling and @sheldoncreekdairy so make a day of it and show these businesses your support❤️ ❤️

What’s the best French restaurant north of Toronto? I’d say Beyond the Gate in Shelburne, hands down.

We ended up here completely by chance last night, and it turned into one of those rare meals you keep talking about afterward. The place is small and intimate, tucked right in downtown Shelburne, with that warm, unpretentious energy that makes you instantly comfortable.

Every dish was flavourful, balanced and cooked perfectly. Choosing a favourite wouldn’t be an easy task. You could taste the care the chef took!

If you’re anywhere near Orangeville or Dufferin County, this place is absolutely worth the drive. We walked in by accident and left already planning our next visit.

Absolutely a delight. Well worth the wait. Serve was wonderful and cook was so helpful with one of us who had a diet restrictions due to health issues. The chef listen to the restrictions and created a separate sauce to help so to make the meal more enjoyable for us. The food was incredibly. Very good French food. Go asap as the chef is selling the business and I’m sure the food quality won’t be the same as it’s hard to cook like this.
