Reviews
Gui BBQ Restaurant & Bar offers a solid dining experience with high-quality, fresh ingredients. The flavors are spot on, and you can tell the meat is well-sourced.
However, there are two things to keep in mind before you go:
The Atmosphere: It’s very high-energy but extremely noisy. Because the tables are packed quite closely together, the acoustics make it difficult to hold a conversation without raising your voice. It’s more of a “lively party” vibe than a “quiet dinner” spot.
Portion Sizes: They use an automatic skew-turning system, which is convenient for cooking, but the device seems to limit the size of the portions. The skewers are notably smaller than the standard size you’d find at other BBQ joints, so you’ll likely need to order more sticks than usual to get full.
Overall, a great spot for fresh food if you don’t mind a loud crowd and smaller bites!
GUI’s menu is extensive, and the portions for each skewer are noticeably larger. They also use coal for cooking by default instead of gas, which enhances the flavor. Their grilling setup includes an auto-rotating mechanism that ensures the meat cooks evenly—a big plus. Keep in mind that each skewer takes at least 5 minutes to cook (sometimes longer), so this isn’t a place for a quick meal. The wait time reflects this too; we waited about 40 minutes for our table.
The vibe at GUI is lit—music videos playing loudly on the TV screens really set the mood. However, we wished the skewers had arrived before the appetizers so we could start grilling sooner. Instead, we finished all the appetizers and then had to wait for the skewers to cook.
Overall, despite the wait and higher cost, GUI delivers on quality and atmosphere, making it my top pick for Chinese skewers.
For appetizers, we had the fried seasoned chicken skin (so good), potato salad, and Korean cold noodles. Everything was flavorful and hit the spot.
One tip: definitely check in on Yelp ahead of time or you’ll be waiting over an hour. Other than that, I absolutely love this place and will keep coming back for my skewer fix!
The skewers here are delicious, the coals give an amazing charred flavor to the meat. My favorites are the marinated lamb, scallop, and chicken cartilage skewers.
The table peanuts are so good too!
Service is great, they will help out with your skewers when they can, and are quick to get you what you need.
Not much more to say than to try it for yourself and hope you have a good time too.
I didn’t expect too much, because I thought they’re chain restaurants. But they’re totally different!
Compared with the one in Irvine, this one is much more busy. We waited 50 mins and then got a table. What I love this restaurant most is that we can BBQ by ourselves. The waiter brought hot carbon and put into a BBQ grill with a rolling chain, then put the fresh meat on the top of the hot carbon, you can see the whole process and eat, the taste was so so great. But the one in Irvine, it was totally different way. They just brought the BBQ to our table and it was not hot at all, just warm, the good got cold very quickly, not good taste.
But the cold dishes just so so, nothing special.
I can’t understand why these two restaurants but the same chain brand makes different tastes.
If you wanna try some really Chinese food, this is a great choice. Remember, come to this location, not the one in Irvine.
The service and the food were great during both visits and I would gladly come back again.
LOCATION / PARKING:
Located just south of the 60 Freeway in Rowland Heights off Nogales. You can actually see the building from the freeway. If you park on the corner of the building closest to their signage, there is a small elevator you can take up to the second floor. Turn left and you’ll see a large door that will automatically slide open if you stand close to it.
INTERIOR / AMBIENCE:
Once the large, sliding door opens, you’ll enter a black and red space lit with neon lights and a huge statue near the bar. The atmosphere is filled with loud chatter and music, and the setting with the hot grills in the middle of the table is more suitable for groups and evening dining.
MENU:
They have quite an extensive menu of different meat and vegetable skewers, soups, noodles, appetizers, drinks, and much more. I enjoyed the items we ordered, especially the Pork Belly Skewers, the Cucumber Salad, and the GUI Street Dan Dan Noodles! I really liked the pork belly skewers a lot and the “dipping powders” (seasonings) went so well with them. The cucumbers were so refreshing with the added cilantro. And the Dan Dan Noodles — oh my goodness — were so chewy, bouncy, spicy, and delicious! The best I ever had!
STAFF:
During both visits, we had excellent service. For example, our server during the first visit with my friends was impeccable. He literally catered to us and was super knowledgeable. He was extremely attentive and made sure our drinks were refilled and our used plates taken away. The server at my second visit with my family was also great! Before ordering, we informed the server that one of my nieces has food allergies and she gave us suggestions of items that should be okay for her to consume. They made a special (plain) skewer and mild Dan Dan Noodles for her to enjoy and we were happy my niece was able to enjoy the food we were also eating.
BE CAREFUL
I would strongly advise not bringing small children to this restaurant because the coals on the grills can get very hot. When transporting the hot coals, the staff does a good job keeping the hot coals contained in wheeled metal carts to prevent any injury or harm. Even as adults, take extra caution because you can feel the heat even when you sit as far back into your seat.
Overall, I am rating this a 4.5 because I thought the food was great here. The least enjoyable for me was the heat emitting from the grill. It was super hot, especially with me wearing contacts. I felt like they were going to melt in my eyes. Lol. It was uncomfortably hot against my skin but, at the same time, appreciated to keep the food hot. Also, the smell of grilled meat will permeate through your clothes. Make sure this is your last stop of the night, haha. Will I come back? Absolutely! It’s an experience each time!
