My name is Bukky and I recently visited La Catrina in West Haven, Connecticut and had such a great experience. Mexican dishes are slowly becoming some of my favorites, so I’m always excited to try new spots, and this one did not disappoint.
The staff were very hands on, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which made the experience even better. You can tell they care about making sure guests are comfortable and enjoying their time.
The portions were very generous and everything we tried was a hit. Truly no misses. One of the highlights was the Margarita Gigante which is absolutely huge and can easily serve about four to five people, making it perfect for sharing with friends or family.
Overall it was a really fun experience with great food, great service, and a lively atmosphere. I would definitely recommend La Catrina if you’re in the West Haven area and looking for authentic Mexican flavors and a good time.

La Catrina is a welcome find! We just happened to stop in one day and were very impressed with the food and service. Everything we have tried is great, but we especially like the tortas and chimichanga special. For drinks, they make the best spicy passionfruit margarita we have ever had. The server, Jared, is very attentive and makes us feel welcome every time. This will be our new go-to spot!

West Haven location, and we have to say we were very impressed! We had loved their food in Milford, and we found it was even more delicious here. We visited during their breakfast hours (Saturday & Sunday 8:30am-3pm), and it’s some of the most authentic and tastiest Mexican breakfast in the area. Stand out items were the lachera pancakes, ham and cheese omelette because of how flavorful it was, and the lamb Barbacoa. The drinks were fantastic, from the simple chocolate banana milkshake to cocktails lit on fire! Since we were there close to lunch, we also enjoyed their birria tacos and signature La Catrina meat and shrimp platter, both being delicious as well. Kind and attentive staff, and the murals were stunning on the wall. We will definitely be recommending this spot!

Plenty of parking spaces. It is located in a strip mall. We waited around 5 minutes for a table for four. We ordered drinks a few minutes later after being seated. It tool them almost 15 minutes to come back with them. Once we placed our order it tool them another 30 minutes or so to bring the food out to our table. People there are cordial and work hard, but it does seem to be understaffed.
I wanted to say that the steaks on three out-of four plates were flavorful, but the meat was a bit hard to chew.
The “Steak Green Sauce Enchiladas” were pretty good. It was missing the Mexican rice on the side to be honest. The “Steak Quesadillas” were okay. The “Bistec a la Mexicana” was good too. My wife had the “Pulpo a la Plancha” special. She said it was delicious and a tad spicy. We payed around $115 without tip.
One more thing. They had a young lady singing live and she was absolutely killing it. Great entertainment!

I can’t recommend it enough! Whether dining in or ordering for pickup, the food is delicious. Every dish I’ve tried has been full of flavor and quality.
The restaurant itself is clean and well-maintained, creating a welcoming atmosphere. But what really stood out to me was the incredible service. I had an experience where I lost my phone in the parking lot, and the staff was incredibly honest and helpful. They found my phone and returned it to me when they saw I was looking for it—such a relief!
Additionally, I had an online ordering issue where I couldn’t modify my order. I called the restaurant, and they graciously added what I needed without charging me extra. This kind of customer care is hard to find!
I will definitely be returning and encourage everyone to support La Catrina. They truly go above and beyond for their customers!

Good Mexican food is really hard to come across in the Northeast, and La Catrina caters to that issue. Everything we had there- the tacos, the octopus, the guacamole and the seafood platter was scrumptious! 03/09/2025. LaCatrina hits it out of the park AGAIN! Good food, good drinks, nice atmosphere, and attentive waitresses – what more could you ask for. Had steak enchiladas w green sauce. Nicely done.. wife had shrimp fajitas and came on a hot plate, sizzling. Excellent! A definite recommended place.
11/4/22. La Catrina hits it out of the park again! This place never fails to deliver a good meal at a decent price. I had a seafood soup.. LOADED with shrimp, mussels, clams calamari and octopus. Soup had some heat to it, although I did spice it up more with supplied red pepper flakes.. OUTSTANDING! CLEAN AND FRESH! Wife had her usual.. shrimp fajitas. Again, excellent.

Easily the best Mexican food in west haven. They start you with homemade tortilla chips and a black bean salsa. We the got the nachos (no scallions)for an appetizer and they were the best nachos I’ve had in a long time (Take that margaritaville). My buddy got the birria tacos which were ok but if I want birria, I’ll go to mr taco in Meriden. I got a chicken and steak burrito (surprise) and it was fantastic. Best burrito I’ve had in a long time and it comes with a salad or French fries. I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten a burrito anywhere that came with a side dish. The meats in the burrito were flavored so well that the juices would pool at the bottom of the tortilla making for the most flavorful bites of the whole meal AND they did the tortilla so well that even with all those juices pooling, there was absolutely no breaks in the tortilla itself. Their red sauce is also very delicious and has a nice kick to it. Highly, highly recommended.
