Seattle Gourmand
Having lived in Quebec for many years, I have very high standards for French cuisine. However, Copine became my favorite French restaurant in Seattle from the very first bite of the amuse-bouche. This restaurant deserves far more recognition than it currently receives

I opted for the tasting menu with an additional course, and every dish was exceptional. The fact that the menu changes weekly is impressive and speaks to the kitchen’s creativity and commitment. The atmosphere is calm and elegant, providing the perfect backdrop to focus on the meal. But don’t get me wrong. It’s not that it could make you feel uncomfortable, but it’s a perfect place for a dine out with chit chat.

The only slight detraction was the service. While the food was flawless, one member of the staff seemed to be having an off day and provided very brief, lackluster explanations of the dishes. Despite this, the culinary experience was so strong that it remains a must-visit.

What an amazing night. Chef McCrain and the team at Copine blew my expectations out of the water! The atmosphere was relaxing and cozy, the staff was wonderful! All of our accomodations met , any questions we had got answered, service was smooth. We had the starter and mid course add ons which made for more fun! Getting to try new flavors and elegant preparations was invigorating. Watching my girlfriends face light up as she tried different foods, combinations and textures for the first time was the best experience I could ask for. Thank you team at Copine for an unforgettable dining experience.

Copine is the best! They are very considerate. The atmosphere is good. And the food. Oh the food. I love every single dish they serve. And they never disappoint. And I come with my wife every month almost. The wine pairing is also really really great. Loved every bite and every minute of it. Always a great time. They deserve to be seen by more people.

I’ve had one of the best fine dining experiences in Seattle here at Copine, even better than Canlis.

Seattle cuts loose to a lot of fine dining experiences, especially a lot of the restaurants here do not pay attention to detail, or service usually comes subpar. I would say Copine really focuses on the basics of making an experience for you, so it becomes a meaningful experience.

First and foremost, they have a great understanding of French cuisine. Everything tastes very delicate and well thought out. I definitely loved the steak and their meat dishes. I think the chef has way better understanding of cooking meat rather than seafood, so as someone who loves meat, this was an enjoyable meal.

How can I forget about their service! Their staff was thoroughly trained and very knowledgeable. I really loved all the wine pairings and hearing the thoughts behind. Service was above and beyond, and everyone was so kind to make my birthday dinner something special.

There are 2 fine dining restaurants I would recommend from now on: Copine and Cafe Juanita.

Always an amazing culinary experience. The chef builds complex, delicious, and satisfying dishes that are also a feast for the eyes. I went recently to eat from the bar menu and chat with a few friends. I can see myself coming back to do this more often this coming year—especially since their bar menu changes every week!

I treated my parents to Copine for their holiday gift, since they do not usually treat themselves to fine dining.
The staff made an incredible experience and the food was amazing,… parents were raving about the atmosphere, service and taste.

Jill was especially helpful with planning and scheduling their meal. She followed up with me and made suggestions on additional things she and her team could do to make sure my parents had the best experience possible. This included helping me with remote payment, tailoring their suggestions and service to budget and taste preferences… she even printed menus with no prices so that my parents could enjoy with out thinking about cost. All of these were her idea, and I credit their great experience to her service.

After living across from Copine for nearly a year, and then moving, we finally made a reservation, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. The restaurant’s intimate, refined atmosphere is complemented by attentive, knowledgeable service. From the amuse (not pictured) to dessert, every dish was beautifully presented and delicious. Overall, the combination of exquisite food and impeccable service makes Copine a must-visit in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. We’ll definitely be returning.

TLDR: The dishes at Copine are beautiful (except for 1 – see below), but when it comes to the taste, nearly every dish falls flat on its face. Most aspects of the meal are underwhelming. I rate this 1 star because this seems to be pretty consistent problems patrons have experienced here and it doesn’t seem like a problem the chefs have addressed.

The prefix meal started at $140 a person with optional additions for extra cost. My girlfriend and I went for Valentines day where we each got the prefix menu, the optional $15 second course add on, and a cocktail each. Pre-tip the whole meal came out to be around ~$375.

First, I will start with the positives. The service staff was friendly and attentive. The dishes are pretty. 1 of the 8 dishes we had was great. Shout out to the butternut squash agnolotti – I don’t think there is a single thing I would’ve changed about it, but my girlfriend did think it was a little too salty. It is disappointing though that the best thing that I ate the entire meal was an add on though.

Now onto the negatives. Besides the dish I highlighted above, none of the dishes stood out in any positive way. Everything was extremely underwhelming. Most dishes were too salty, and the flavors were unbalanced. The best example of this was the Citrus Cured and Smoked Ora King Salmon – which was one of the main courses. The salmon was too salty, the citrus was too sweet, and the sauce tasted like a runny tartar sauce.

The other main course we got was the Beef Bavette. The flavors on this dish were fine. But for a high end restaurant, serving a tough flank steak with a sauce even I could replicate (not a professional chef) hardly met my expectations.

The starters and deserts were both disappointing, not bad, but not very good either. I got the Chocolate crepe cake with mint ice cream and there was just no balance at all. The mint flavors completely overwhelmed every other taste in the dish when eaten together to the point where I would’ve just preferred to eat it alone than with the cake.

The Swiss cheese fondue was laughable. It came out with a cup of cheese, 3 pieces of prosciutto, 3 “balls” of apple, and 2 croutons with the laziest presentation of any of the dishes from the night. The ingredients were tasty, but frankly it reminded me of something I would prepare when I get home from a night of drinking, and I am too lazy to cook anything. Just look at the picture below (#4), is this something that you’d be happy if you got from a high end meal? It honestly felt like we were being mocked for paying as much as we did.

The last dish to go over is the Hamachi crudo which was good, and that is about it. Not notable, just tastes like any other Hamachi crudo you could get at a typical Japanese restaurant in the area for ~$15.

The last point I want to make about this experience was the the restaurant did not feel upscale. The restaurant was clean, but it felt very sterile and had no personality. The lighting in the entrance was harsh, and most walls were relatively bare.

With all of this being said, a lot of what I commented on literally wouldn’t have crossed my mind if the meal was half as expensive, but for this price, my expectations were much higher and I left sorely disappointed.
