So I’m here because I’ve been searching Oahu for Ono kine Pukehi ribs or meat. Which even Hawaiian places find it hard to show restraint with the ingredients of Pulehu meat. It’s actually simple Pulehu meat is Steak or ribs and Hawaiian salt. Simple let the grill do the work. Then PAU. (Finish)
But over here on Oahu these Hawaiian restaurants/places can’t seem to see the simplicity of Pulehu meat? These places don’t know the traditions of Hawaiian Pulehu meat. They start adding garlic powder? Add a shoyu sugar marinade? Even Helena’s marinade their So called pulehu meat! Ask em they broke tradition.
But this place! KAU KAU GRILL understand how to keep it simple. Just Hawaiian salt at the grill. Even pepper is over doing it. Maybe it’s the Hawaiian salt? Maybe it’s a got grill? Or maybe they get Hawaiian blooded cook that doesn’t was his hands and is keeping it Hawaiian? KAU KAU GRILL they get it! K.I.S.S. Method. Keep it Simple Stupid. The Spaghetti Mac Salad is winners. I’ll try their Poke next time. Eh! I still taste the grill char flavor from my Pulehu ribs. SO ONO!

I visited Hawaii from Japan on vacation, and this place was totally worth the trip from Waikiki! The ribs were amazingly tender, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended if you love good barbecue!

Really lovely service, great food, can’t go wrong. Got there around 11:30am on a Wednesday and certain items were already sold out – this spot is frequented by locals working in the area and very busy.

Best food I had out there, not going to lie I ordered this plate for the garlic shrimp and short ribs. I was amazed by the BBQ I live in Texas and was not expecting this hands done some of the best BBQ I ever had and poke I believe it was called hurricane had some spice. The service was amazing during my time out in Hawaii never ran into someone with a horrible attitude and this place was perfect. Kau Kau Grill is a must try.

Kau Kau Grill moved from Mapunapuna to Sand Island Access Road. Their new location is nice and has enough parking, but it is take out only. The fried saimin combo with pulehu short ribs was $24. Food quality was okay with good noodles, rice, mac salad, and the smoked short ribs. All you can eat Korean BBQ is a much better value.

What a find, da kine is located in a desolated industrial like area. A few other small food take out places adjacent.

No dine in, strictly takeout, opens at 1000, they were already slammed with take out orders, luckily we online ordered in advance.

Opened the door and your basically in their kitchen/storage areas, they work hard and make it work. Staff friendly and efficient to a fault.

Now let’s get to their broke da mouth plate lunches. For a small place they have an extensive menu, small or regular plates, can make your own combos.

Smoked meat & onions. Meat was tender and had a rich chocolatey smokey flavor profile, onions cooked not soft with with a slight crunch, all over rice and a separate small container of the spaghetti salad side which came with all the other plate lunches.

Roast pork & gravy plate lunch. Chunks of tender shredded pork slathered in tasty brown gravy. Gravy lovers wet dream.

BBQ ribs plate- rib meat tender and falling off the bone. Meat had a slight smokey crust, perfection. This would rival other rib places but at an affordable cost

Btw, we ordered the small plate which was more than enough, I was told the large plates are humungous.

I’m still salivating on how well each plate lunch held their own, now this is how you become a successful business.

Michelin star reviewers, if you’re out there, they deserve a minimum 1 star rating, do your job.

Love the place—great plate lunch! Got the BBQ ribs and poke (forgot to take a picture of the poke, though)—both were awesome! The mac salad was good, too (they use spaghetti noodles, which I had never seen before. But still good!) The ribs were bomb—fall off the bone, great BBQ sause that had a great taste, but wasn’t overpowering. They guy behind the counter is so chill and awesome. Definitely a place to grab some food and go to the beach. Heads up, it’s an order and go kind of place, no room for eating there.

This place is amazing and has the best meat we have found in the area. The baby back ribs are hands down one of the best things I’ve put in my mouth and are definitely my favorite. Get the Trust Us special with the ribs and shrimp, you will not be disappointed. Take out only and parking is a nightmare but it’s worth it.

I ordered the Dynamite Salmon. It was cooked to perfection not dry at all & with a slight crunch to each bite, the sauce topping the salmon went well with the rice. And the spaghetti was great too. This was hands down the best thing I have eaten since I got to Hawaii.
