I stopped in on a Sunday night after catching the sign out of the corner of my eye at highway speed. Inside, the place is bright, clean, and surprisingly spacious. A large faux tree stands in the center like an indoor plaza, Valentine’s decorations hanging from the branches. To the left is a spotless open kitchen you can see from the counter, always a reassuring sign. No giant wall menu, just a paper one handed over when you order. Humble, slightly chaotic, and promising.
My wife spotted the papas rellena immediately, basically a loaded baked potato split open and filled with carne asada, sour cream, cheese, avocado, onions, and cilantro. It was huge and legitimately excellent. The steak came in big, tender chunks, not chopped scraps, and even the leftovers the next day held up.
I ordered a pastor burrito and two carne asada tacos. Before sitting down, the cashier pointed out a small self serve bar with fruit, cucumbers, and toppings. That detail turned out to be important.
The tacos were straightforward and flavorful. I added onion, cilantro, green salsa to one and red to the other. The green had a solid kick and real flavor. The red was on another level. Dark, intense, and very easy to overdo. Within seconds I was sweating, tearing up, and reaching for sliced cucumbers like they were emergency equipment. Painful, yes, but the kind of heat that wakes you up and clears your sinuses completely.
Drinks are exactly what you want in a place like this. Behind the counter sit large clear containers of aguas frescas in bright colors, the kind you end up pointing at because they all look good. Watermelon, cantaloupe, sometimes horchata depending on the day. Cold, lightly sweet, and genuinely refreshing. There are also glass bottles of Mexican Coke, Jarritos in loud fruit flavors, and assorted canned drinks. The clink of glass bottles, the pop of a can and condensation running down the sides just adds to the feeling that you found a real neighborhood spot, not a chain pretending to be one.
Then came the pastor.
Pastor is the lie detector of a taqueria. Most places serve something greasy, overly sweet, or burnt and call it good. This was not that. This was the kind of pastor that makes you stop mid bite and just stare at the taco. Crispy caramelized edges, impossibly tender interior, smoke and spice wrapped around a sweetness that tastes built in, not added later. The pineapple isn’t just thrown on top, it’s cooked into the meat so every bite hits savory, sweet, and char at once.
You don’t talk while eating something like this. You just nod, maybe close your eyes for a second, because your brain is recalibrating what good pastor is supposed to be. I’ve had pastor all over Southern California, from late night trucks to busy taquerias with lines out the door, and this belongs in that conversation near the top.
I barely remember the beans and rice. They were there, probably fine, but completely overshadowed.
SoCal has no shortage of interchangeable “-bertos” spots, drive thru temples of beige burritos and forgettable food. This is not one of them. It feels like a slice of a good LA neighborhood taqueria dropped into Hemet.
It’s about 30 minutes from my house. Inconvenient… Absolutely worth the drive.
If you go, get the pastor and don’t skip the papas rellena.
I got a burrito, sopes, and melon Agua frescas and each part was very enjoyable.
Daughter had pozole and she cleaned out the plate. Will be coming back.
We also had an alambre which is like a skillet with meat, fried layer of cheese and veggies. Meat was super thin cut with the skillet giving you crispy bits everywhere!
You can mix and match meats with is awesome carne asada with al pastor was our favorite!
The salsa is salsa bar style so pick what you want. There are various levels of heat and yummy goodness. Red/green/ guaca salsa/ pickled habanero onions/ nopal salsa/ juicy fresh limes.
There is menudo all week and can pick and choose how you want it. Hominy/ no hominy/ meats etc.
$1 taco Tuesday you know we are coming back for that!
Also Wednesday burrito $9 special.
Sorry no pics we destroyed the food when it was served.
