Cash only!!! WORTH IT. As of this writing, located next to Midway General Store, N 251 Federal Forest Highway 13, Wetmore, MI 49895, where you can buy drinks and ice cream cones [Midway General Store accepts credit cards].
First, what you need to know about me is that I just do not like fish unless it is Salmon or sushi. We were travelling Around Lake Michigan, and since I also have Celiac Disease (medically must eat Gluten Free), this was the only place open for dinner, with good safety ratings on the Find Me Gluten Free App, in the general area of Munising, MI (where our hotel was). The Fish Basket is a dedicated GF establishment.
Let me tell you: I was absolutely blown away with how ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS this fish is!!! He buys it fresh each morning from the local fishermen, who also prep it. We loved it so much from dinner the night before that we changed our lunch plans to eat here, again, before heading completely out of the area.
The whitefish is extremely moist–perfectly battered with a thin, light batter, and fried to perfection. It has such a subtle, slightly sweet flavor that I’ve never experienced in fish, before. The fries are also perfectly fried. Both fish and fries are prepared to order. He shakes some delicious seasonings over the fish, and there’s enough in the bottom of my basket to eat with each fry–fries don’t need ketchup. I don’t know if he makes his own tartar sauce and cole slaw, but both were also fantastic. Wish the cole slaw servings were double, but it sufficed.
I am extremely saddened that I will never have this fish again because I doubt I’ll ever be in the area, again. On the window, he had an article about being recognized nationwide! This spot is a MUST to check out!!!

Most delicious Fish n Chips ever, daily fresh catch from Lake Superior, Gitche Gumme.
In addition to the whitefish we were lucky to get some trout, a pink meat, richer taste. Lightly deep fried in a delicate peppercorn and lemon batter. They said they are considering going with Avocado oil in the future and also gluten free. The owner friendly and also make the best coleslaw.

WOW! Best fried fish I ever had no joke! Falls a part in your mouth and fish Is caught fresh every morning from Lake Superior! Family owned business and a small food shack with outdoor seating! CASH ONLY! Recommend getting the 1/2 pound if your super hungry. Fries were delicious too! 10/10 would recommend you won’t be disappointed.

The fish is great, I mean really great, and in pieces not a fillet. It’s breaded in cornmeal instead of a wet batter, really tasty. Staff couldn’t be nicer. Sole reason it’s not 5 stars is that the fries/chips just fall short, it’s like they were just barely dropped in oil, which given how crispy the fish is doesn’t make sense, maybe it’s a local thing.

This was the best fish fry I’ve ever eaten and a half pound of fresh white fish (you can watch him cut it up and bread it)! It was so good! Cute little outdoor/garage seating. The owners are super nice and helpful with any little tips you might want for the area! A great little hole in the wall!

I like the fact that the owner makes the food fresh. There is longer normally a 15-20min wait for your food to be ready and sometimes longer if there are alot of people. The location is not easy to find without google maps as it’s on the side behind another building…. essentially the alley. Outdoor seating is available but limited to a first come first serve basis. Most people get the food to go and head to a nearby park to eat. As for the food, I was a little disappointed that the fish was dry, it could have just been my portion. The fries were good. Order the 1/4 lbs, it’s plenty of fish.

Stopped here for my first experience of whitefish. I thought it was fantastic. My cousin (a local Michigander and self-proclaimed whitefish afficiando) thought it was ok. Owner and the two ladies were very nice. Owner had his 16 yr old pooch and told us about his friend that was in Grand Funk Railroad! Its set up in a parking lot. Weather was glorious although quite windy. Slaw was tasty but very small serving.

Had the pleasure of enjoying one of upper Michigan’s freshest whitefish entrees with fries cut to order from a raw potatoes, all at the Mid-Way Store down scenic highway 13 that cuts from Munising to the backside of Rapid River and the Garden Pennisula. My favorite fried white fish around. New location than google but worth the 15 min drive, Midway General Store, N 251 Federal Forest Highway 13, Wetmore, MI 49895. They fry with cornmeal which makes it so yummy. Very reasonable price $15 for 1/4 pound of fish and fries. Sam is very kind. Cash only!

Ate here last week. Fish was excellent. You could tell it is very fresh. Plenty of outdoor/garage seating. Nice if you’re hungry and don’t want to dine at a restaurant. Workers were really friendly. Might be better if they could roll out the fish faster when they are busy.
