My wife and I had a pleasant experience here. The inside is bright and alive and reminds me of any other Italian restaurant. The wait staff was alternative, quick to take our order and give us refills. The host (I believe he is the owner but I never asked) actually came by and greeted us and chatted with us for a second. After tell him that we order a calzone, he actually invited us to the back to show us the wood burning oven (pictured here) and how our calzone was made. It was a nice touch.
The pesto calzone we ordered was good, but I can’t say it was the best I’ve ever had. The flavors were good and it was well seasoned, and the cheese combination was a good choice. However, when we cut into it a bit of oil leaked out quite a bit onto the plate; not too bad. The one thing that I did knock the calzone on was the center was definitely undercooked. It was warm, but not hot. It didn’t take away from the flavors any since the middle was mostly mozzarella and ricotta, but it was an unpleasant surprise. The tomato sauce that it came with was excellent. I’d be happy to come back and try something in that tomato sauce.
I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and think that since they were really busy when we came it’s probably why they pulled our calzone early. It wasn’t bad by any means, but the like warm center did make it hard to finish. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and will definitely come back.
For the main course I ordered the Seafood Risotto, which comes with Jumbo shrimp. They were huge, 5 pieces for the whole dish though. I prefer more variety like clams and scallops as well, but it did the job. It was a little too cluttered- onions, tomatoes were too big, and mushrooms. It disrupted the soft texture I love in risotto but none the less was still delicious.
My partner had the Lunch Eggplant Parmesan and let me try a bite and I much preferred that over my own dish! The marinara was light and delicious, and the eggplant was soft and not too oily with that satisfying breaded crunch. Can’t wait to eat the leftovers at home.
I had the Monte y Mare pasta, which had shrimp and sausage with a light cream sauce. Very good. My brother had the house specialty squid ink pasta, which he enjoyed.
We had several apps to start, including calamari, grilled cauliflower, stuffed eggplant, and white pizza. All very good.
The place was packed but it never felt loud or noisy. We had a large round table, and were able to hear each other over the full restaurant of other Mother’s Day diners.
Service was great and food was on the lower side of reasonably priced.
They had several large tables, so definitely a great spot for family dinners.
We have been to this restaurant in Rockville for dinner and absolutely loved it. It’s cozy and quiet. I am not a big eater and had a variety of appetizers with wine (house Merlot was excellent and Brussels sprouts from hot appetizers menu was great), my friend had grilled salmon salad and another friend had capesante risotto. Everything was served at once, the servers were knowledgeable and polite. Overall – a great experience.
