WARNING: Major Health Hazard – Do Not Eat Here

If you are passing through Clayton, New Mexico, DO NOT EAT AT WILD HOURSE GRILL AND STEAKHOUSE!!!! Our stop at Wild Horse Grill and Steakhouse completely ruined our family ski trip and resulted in two days of food poisoning. This establishment has a blatant disregard or lack of respect for basic health and safety standards.

The Service & Wait: The restaurant was understaffed with only one server for the entire floor. It took 15 minutes to be greeted, and once we finally ordered, we waited 45 minutes for our food.

The Food: Because the kitchen was so far behind, the food was dangerously rushed. My wife and I were served Chicken Fried Chicken that was completely raw and icy in the center. Because it was smothered in hot gravy, the undercooked, rubbery pink meat wasn’t immediately obvious until the third bite.

The Facility: The lack of hygiene in the dining area is eclipsed only by the state of the restrooms. Due to “old pipes,” guests are instructed not to flush toilet paper. However, the small waste baskets were overflowing, leaving feces-covered toilet paper scattered across the floor. It is an unsanitary environment that no licensed establishment should be allowed to maintain.

The Aftermath: Both my wife and I fell ill the following day. We spent the entire weekend confined to our hotel room instead of on the slopes. This wasn’t just a “bad meal”—it was a complete disregard for food safety. Save yourself the misery and the potential illness; do not stop here.

We were passing through on the way to a job and found this little gem. A great little place that appears to be pretty popular. The food was delicious and well presented. Loved the decorations, the staff were friendly and attentive. Seemed to be the only restaurant open later in the day.

I should have believed the other negative reviews. How do you mess up french fries? They were limp.
The meat on the burger was just OK. Everything was unsalted and unseasoned. The lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles were sad. I don’t know how else to describe them.
The ketchup tasted super weird, almost floral and was kind of watery and the mayonnaise was gross. So I ended up using only mustard in the end. Very disappointing. Will not be back.

I consider myself an honest reviewer. I’ll start with the positive the place seems clean and we honestly picked this place because online it looked decent and reasonable. Food was basic but enjoyable. Service is a little slow and the waitress seems like she is going a million miles per hour with maybe 3 tables at most in the restaurant. She might also be the person cooking so maybe that’s why she seemed so busy. What I didn’t appreciate at all is the prices on the menu are not what I was charged. She did apologize and said menus are not updated and obviously paying $4 extra per plate wasn’t something I was happy to do. Based on basic food, service and not honoring menu prices. I only give this place 3 stars ⭐️. We’re a military family coming from Fort Carson down to Fort Cavazos so we had no option but to stop and eat. Hope this post helps others traveling.

This little stop is a great food experience. Service was quick and very accommodating with requests. Food was fresh and delicious without a long wait time. Atmosphere was pleasant with quiet music and no TVs. This allowed for easy discussions across the tables and between members. Lovely experience without being overpriced.

My steak fingers were really good. The restaurant is nothing fancy but it was clean. The waitress was attentive. We’ll add it to our list to stop at to eat during our travels between Texas and Colorado.

One horse town. Only thing open besides Pizza joint. Dried out hamburger steak with a “gravy “ sauce that smothered everything. I took a few bites and moved on. I’d pass on visiting this one.

Waitress was good, and working hard, but the food was disappointing. Grilled salmon was dry and leathery, and fries were cold. Friend’s T-Bone ordered med rare came out well done, and had to be replaced.
