Located in Kawaihae, Anuenue Ice Cream & Shave Ice have been serving up great, flavorful frozen treats for many years. Their ice cream is of high quality with many flavors offered. It is a bit pricey. Their shaved ice comes in a plastic cone. It is a generous combination of ice and syrups, which come in many tasty flavors. The staff were very friendly. Definitely hits the spot on a hot day. Cool out at Anuenue IceCream and Shaved Ice shop. You won’t be disappointed.

This place is open until 6 p.m. on the days it operates, which is great because many shave ice shops tend to close earlier, so we were happy to be able to stop by even after coming back from the beach. We arrived a little after 5 p.m., and there were already two groups in line, which shows how popular it is.
The shop only accepts cash, so it’s important to keep that in mind when visiting. Although it has a storefront, the setup is similar to a food truck—there is no indoor seating, and only two benches outside.
I personally prefer natural flavors, but this shop only offers lychee as a natural option.
We had two medium shave ices. My husband had the rainbow, and I had one with three flavors: watermelon, lychee, and strawberry, topped with a scoop of coffee-flavored ice cream. Both had soft, pleasant colors and were delicious and soothing.
The shop seems to be located in a small local shopping center along Akoni Pule Highway. Although the storefront is unassuming and easy to miss, the parking area is spacious, making it a casual and convenient place to stop by.

We used to visit this shave ice stand on the Big Island often when we visited with the kids. It’s been some time but my husband and I (kids are grown, we were solo ) had to go back based on our fond memories. The service – absolutely terrific! Greeted us with enthusiasm with the aloha spirit.. the shave ice…was very icy, more like a snow-cone vs. a shave ice. The ice cream was very yummy lilikoi cheesecake…oh yes). We’ve experienced Ululani’s many times on Maui prior to the fires and also Motsumoto’s on Oahu and I guess that’s what we use as the benchmark. We will go back – absolutely. Support local especially in a less tourist area.

Thirteen of us arrived at 5:00pm and ordered ice cream and shave ice. The ice cream is home made and tastes great! Since the place closes at 6pm we had to make sure we had plenty of time to order and eat!

This place was great. Saw a line forming to try this place so we jumped in. Wait was not bad, the gentleman working was pretty quick. There were a few different flavors I saw but didn’t know what they tasted like, such as LiHing Mui (fermented plum) was actually really good and Ube flavored Ice Cream (Sweet potato) also yummy. He gave us a sample of both. The portion is good and the price was reasonable. He definitely was not frugal with the syrup. He also was very friendly. I would recommend stopping here and giving it a try.

Great place to end the day for a small (or not!) snack if you are venturing along the Kohala coast. I’ve always gotten ice cream here, but reactions from other customers around me suggest the shave ice is just as good! After you’ve gotten your ice cream or other treat, go downstairs to explore the galleries down below. This place is very crowded (justifiably) during lunch, beware! Come just after they open or in the evening about an hour before closing to have a leisurely experience sampling your favorite cone or cup. Cash only! An ATM is nearby for convenience.

Fantastic little ice cream spot to help you cool down and enjoy some local flavors. Shave ice, ice cream, shakes, and so much more! Call ahead and you can get pints or half gallons to go but bring dollars because this place is cash only and theres no seating outside the service window.

The owner of this ice cream stand is a saint! The large family of tourists ahead of me had a caboodle of small children and this gentleman kept giving the kids free samples to keep them happy while they waited. He very carefully took everyone’s order and made sure they were 100% satisfied. My Lilikoi Cheesecake cone was well worth the wait. It was tart and refreshing. Perfect for the 89° day. Highly recommend! CASH ONLY!!!

Excellent shave ice (I got the works – ice cream, mochi and azuki beans). Was the best on big island so far!

If you get a taste test scoop of ice cream, you’ll get a whopping spoonful amount – the portions are big!
