I came to visit my kids and grands from Florida 11/20/25 and we wanted to go out for Chinese. We had to decide between Hong Kong Buffet in Elk River which has always been our main go to because it is closer and there are so many options and the food is always fresh and plentiful or go to China Buffet in Monticello. We decided on China Buffet because of the option to have hibachi. When we got there at 6:30 pm there were only a handful of tables occupied. They made us pay before sitting down and for 3 adults, a 12 year old and a 6 year old it was 90.00. The hibachi was gone, and the food was all cold and very old, to the point I had to say something about refreshing the food. It was dinner time, there shouldn’t have been cold dried out food. If I could give zero stars I would. The servers had been reduced to bussers only, as we got our own drinks. We did find out from one of the newly demoted servers that the “changes” just started that day and that they had not been informed prior. It was truly the worst dining experience we have ever had. The kids and grands went to Hong Kong tonight 11/24/25 and called me to tell me that the price was half the amount we were charged at China Buffet, the food was fresh, hot and delicious. Maybe it was better before the new changes, but if what we experienced is how it’s going to be going forward save your money and go elsewhere. China Buffet you should really think about closing up shop.

The new owners have removed a lot of people’s favorite dishes. I say this because not only were my favorites not there i heard 4 others asking for their favs and being told they don’t have thwm anymore. We loved the raw bar and would make the 45 min drive just for that and I was gone . The prices of course went up but it did include the drink that use to be separate. Everything is do yourself getting drinks and seating and then only had one waitress clearing and wiping down in between customers i felt so bad for her that I left a tip when normally if I have to get everything myself I don’t tend to tip.
We sadly will not be back.

Delicious Buffet, large variety of choices with great quality! All my favorite dishes at a reasonable price. Sushi on the buffet, and a hibachi style grill included with a large classic buffet! Desserts bar and salad bar are much larger than any other place I’ve seen! I was amazed!!! 100% worth the 30 miles I drove! Must try!! They also had egg foo young with savory gravy which I don’t find on buffets often!! ❤️ magnificent!

Me and my family were sadly disappointed by The New “upgrades” or changes to this buffet. They no longer do the hibachi grill which to me was the only thing that was really worth coming for. They also took out some more favorites for us and replaced them with pounds of breading around the shrimp. Staff were nice but seemed the only focus was the sushi bar.

It’s a buffet so there really should be a N/A option for service. It was fine but they just brought a drink & the bill. The typical chinese fare was … ok. Oddly, the pigs in a blanket, chicken meatloaf, and Apple strudel were fantastic. Not what I expected from a chinese buffet but that pulled out a 4. Have been there previously & will be back.

The service was amazing, our waitress was very helpful and attentive. The food, however was not great overall. The fried rice was seasoned too strongly and unusually with black pepper. The Honey Chicken was our favorite and best thing we tried.

Getting rid of the hibatchi grill was a mistake; it’s the only thing which set them apart from a cheap Chinese buffet; it’s the only reason why I was a regular customer for about two decades(?) Hot and fresh food with ingredients of my choosing was something I really looked forward to. Unless they bring back the hibatchi, I won’t be returning to China Buffet.
