I love to cook, and am an expert cook at home, using fresh ingredients and real butter when cooking, so what I say next comes from 30 years of doing that.
The French toast (3 slices for $9) was good (think I might have tasted a hint of cinnamon in there?) the blackberry pancakes ($14 for 2 large ones) were from a mix, though, not from scratch (to be honest, I don’t remember if they have ever claimed to make all of their food from scratch). We loved the generous amount of fresh blackberries in the pancakes!
However. The “butter” they gave us was a weightless, oily, bitter mess with a horrible chemical taste, which absolutely ruined our French toast and pancakes, (we’re glad we didn’t put it on every thing, so we could enjoy some of it) . Definitely plan to bring your own butter if you want to enjoy anything needing butter!
Their sausage links ($6 for just 2 regular sized links) were definitely not anything we could eat. They were pretty scorched on one side (anyone can have an off day, though) in addition to an off-putting spongey texture and a really bad chemical aftertaste. I’m not sure what they were made of, maybe a meat/by product mix? It certainly wasn’t 100% real breakfast sausage; didn’t have the satisfying mouthfeel and chewiness of real meat, but it was better than the weirdly bitter spongy mess that cheaper restaurants serve. If you love good sausage, we’d caution against ordering theirs.
Overall, if we were to eat there again, we’d definately bring our own butter and stay away from their sausage. They have a nice variety on their menu to try, at least!
Adding to my review in that, yesterday, the 28th September, 2025, David delivered to our home in Hugo Road, Merlin, two dinners from the Riffle Cafe’s special roast beef serving. The meals were superb, perfectly cooked, and delicious! Thank you, Tami and David. Well done!
Those sourdough pancakes are FIRE. Perfect crisp and delicious sour flavor! We also enjoyed the sandos we got to go for the river. My husband’s steak and eggs were a great value and steak was perfectly seasoned/cooked.
Service was slow to greet and take our order, but very nice and friendly. When you’re the only diners in the place, you don’t expect to wait 15 minutes to order, but I guess I should’ve expected them to be on island time…
We recommend dining on their porch or getting takeout due to numerous fleas indoors. Sitting outside on a very smoky day was preferable to the nasty lil jumpers getting on our feet/legs inside. Edited To Clarify- Not flies. Fleas. Little jumping fleas like the kind dogs get. They were getting on our legs and feet in the booth to right of door so we moved out to porch. We did not see any flies while we were there, but it was morning.
