Cute local bar and restaurant in Ridgewood. It’s smart to make reservations especially for brunch and dinner times. The tables are pretty close together so keep secrets till later.
The food is comforting and thoughtfully done but felt portions were on the small side. We ordered the egg tostada, shrimp tacos, and a side of potatoes to share. I loved the adorable little cow milk pitcher. It just made me smile.
The servers were kind and attentive even though they were pretty slammed.

I did enjoy the food at Hellbender, but the service could have been better.
We were among the first guests seated, yet it still took about 5–8 minutes for our server to notice us and bring water.
The portion size of aguachile is quite small, considering the price. The Brussels sprouts lacked flavor.
On the positive side, the empanada was amazing, as were the mushroom tacos and fried cheese.
Update: The brunch menu is so good and tasty. The service was much better than our previous visit.

From the moment me and friend walked in we felt like “yeah we’re about to have a good meal and good time.” Our waitress Lillian made our entire 1st time experience simply amazing. She was so personable, warm and explained the menu/drinks . The fried Oxacan cheese – 10/10, the roasted mushroom tacos – 10/10, himachi dish – 10/10, 3 cheese empanada 10/10, lamb dish – a little gamey for my palette, but still good 7.5/10 and the drinks -10/10. Even though it was crowded it was still comfortable – we will definitely be returning for their famous brunch and dinner again and again! Hellbender is top tier!

Came here for brunch on a Sunday, had a reservation. Sat at the bar for a drink before we went to our table. Drinks were really good we had a few each, service was great. We ordered a few different things, the bloody Maria mignonette with the oysters was tasty and a little spicy. The pork tacos were incredible and of course we got the masa pancakes which were delicious but so filling. The jello of the day was a Concord grape jello with peanut butter drizzle and a homemade whipped cream which was really really good. Would love to come back here. And the bathrooms are huge!

Ordered about 9 or 10 dishes here and all were incredibly delicious. Dishes are ordered to share. Also tried a margarita and a bloody maria, very well made cocktails. Highly recommend, worth a trip to Ridgewood just to visit the excellent Mexican restaurant

Hellbender is an absolute culinary delight. Continuing Rolo’s tradition of perfectly prepared and seasoned food, Hellbender sets itself apart with its distinct menu of traditionally inspired but modernly (Is that even a word?) made regional cuisine.
Service is prompt and efficient while remaining completely unobtrusive. Apps and drinks were on the table in record time even though the dining room was full. Everything was fresh and vibrant and bursting with flavor. Being this full on a Wednesday night is no coincidence. It’s only a matter of time before Hellbenders garners the same reputation for quality as its sister location.
Places like this remind me why I decided to become a chef.

To start off I wanted to love this place. My wife and I love trying Mexican restaurants. Very friendly staff and service was great. Now for the food thats another story. We ordered the fried oaxacan cheese and it was a little greasy but good. We also ordered the pork tacos I have to say the pork itself was bland but what they top the tacos with was delicious. For mains I ordered the chilaquiles which was not good. It was cold and had no flavor like it needed salt or something. My wife ordered the enfrijoladas and again was just bland missing those wonderful Mexican flavors. Overall it was a big disappointment food wise. Something me and my wife were excited about.

This is my 2nd time here (previously came for dinner). After a while of seeing their popular pancakes online I decided to return for brunch and it did not disappoint. We waited no more than a few minutes to get seated (walk in). The staff was lovely, the drinks were great, and the food was amazing. Not to mention, great tunes playing throughout the restaurant.
We had fried oaxacan cheese, castelfranco salad, heirloom masa pancakes, and mega thick cut bacon.

Easily five stars, maybe even six seriously delicious food. Like seriously, this is game changing.
My friend and I started with Chamoy Pear dish, which was absolutely mouth-watering and zesty. Then we got the Baby Gem salad, which was an interesting New Age twist on a Caesar. THEN, omg, we got the lamb shoulder with some tortillas on the side. DAMN! That went crazy…. And the sauce… omfg. Soo fricking good. No notes, just so delicious.
Service was excellent & we sat outside. Would have loved to have gone inside or tried dessert. There were so many other dishes on the menu that seemed really interesting as well, and unique flavor combos. Apparently there’s a real stuffed cheetah in there (allegedly). Can’t wait to go again!

Very tasty. The chips and guacamole were crunchy and fresh. The Oaxacan cheese was perfection. I also really enjoyed the specialty drink. It contained a liqueur made by monks. The drink was a great compliment to the meal
