Aomori has a beautiful space with great decor and a strong sense of style. However, the food itself didn’t quite hit the mark or fully live up to our expectations for a new, hyped Portland restaurant. Some dishes were excellent, while others were surprisingly underwhelming. Here’s what we ordered and how we rated each dish:
1. Wolf Neck Oysters – 5/5
A fantastic way to start the meal. The oysters were very fresh, and the ponzu and accompanying ingredients complemented them perfectly.
2. Kai-yaki – 2/5
Unfortunately, this dish fell flat. It was under-seasoned, bland, and overall quite underwhelming.
3. Niku Dofu – 4/5
Simple, comforting, and well executed. Nicely seasoned and cooked, with very satisfying flavors.
4. Inaniwa Duck Udon – 4/5
A solid dish overall. The duck breast was tender and flavorful, and the broth was rich and well balanced. That said, the only thing is that the two small meatballs felt out of place and didn’t really fit well with the dish.
5. Whisky Pork – 3/5
This was a mixed experience. Surprisingly, the star of the dish was the Brussels sprouts, which were perfectly seared and cooked. The pork itself was under-seasoned and bland, which was disappointing since it should have been the highlight. We both loved and disliked this dish at the same time.
6. Dessert (Matcha) – 5/5
Absolutely loved it. The matcha dessert was delicious, and the presentation was adorable—it came out looking like a mini Christmas tree.

Overall: Aomori is a place we’re glad we tried once, but based on this experience, we’re not sure it’s a restaurant we’d rush to return to.

So good! So many different options for food! Usually I want to try everything but there’s just too much for one visit!! I’ll definitely have to come back.

Great atmosphere! Took me back to the Izakayas in Japan. Vibe from the team was great, super nice and knew a ton for a place that just opened (I asked about a million questions, sorry ). Also the open kitchen is a treat if you end up sitting at the bar!

I’ll definitely be coming back to try more! But I’m also getting the Yakitori-Soba every time no matter what !

The food here was SO good! The vegetable gyoza are definitely the best in Portland and the cocktails are really unique and refreshing! My only very minor complaint is the bar seats don’t have backs (I really just want to lean back and relax when I am out to eat). Oh I almost forgot their pickled vegetables are also 10/10. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back! Lots of vegetarian options as well!

Very hearty, too much umami. Unusual order of food and drink delivery. Nice ambience and wait staff.

Another hit from the friends over at Miyake. The sake selection is incredible and the food was spectacular. I wish the miso scallop with egg had a little more flavor but besides that our experience was 10/10 will definitely be back. Welcome to the neighborhood!

The food and service was worth the wait. We went with a group of friends. We ordered oysters, bluefin tuna, Yakko (chilled tofu), Whisky Pork, Kaisen Katsu, Inaniwa Duck Udon.

Everything was delicious but our favorites were the Whisky Pork and Duck Udon.
