I got the burger combo with chili cheese fries and my husband got the half Philly, 5 wings, and onion rings.
I ordered grilled Lemon Pepper Catfish Combo Dinner & after tasting the fish, realized it was probably blackened fish??? If it was lemon pepper I couldn’t tell because of all the salt! Also, the tarter sauce packets are not good tasting at all, it’s the same brand that Lisa’s Chicken uses & you would think with high dollar fish dinner they would make homemade or at least better quality prepackaged tarter sauce, like at Captain D’s. Now the fish was EXTREMELY SALTY to the point I couldn’t even eat it & that’s the star of the show, hence the overall 1 star rating. A wide area of the floor in front of the counter seemed sticky because when I walked around there, my rubber soles sounded like it was sticky but I didn’t touch it to check it & not sure what that was? NOW the GOOD…
The portion size was nice & the fries & coleslaw tasted real good. I really like they serve lemon pieces with their fish.
They have good quality Gold Peak Tea bottles if you don’t desire soda with your meal & that’s a plus! I also want to say that IF the fish was not so salty & overpowering, the blackened flavor behind it would have tasted so so awesome & it was grilled perfectly & tender…It is a shame I couldn’t eat most of it though The atmosphere is like a Country Diner, price for dinner was close to $15 & if it was all done right, it would have been worth it.
I decided to take my 88-year-old mother to lunch so Hawkins Tasty Food was our destination. It is 22.3 miles from my house to the front door of the diner.
Upon entering we were greeted, I said hello to LaTeisha, and quickly seated. Shortly after being seated a stream of locals started showing for lunch, always a good sign.
Unlike some large chain restaurants, the menu was smaller with more specialty items. Fried catfish, fried shrimp, and fried chicken were all available. Noticeably absent, but not really missed was chicken fried steak.
My mother selected the fried catfish combo, and I chose the fried shrimp combo. The combo plate comes with fries, tots, or onion rings. I chose onion rings, and my mom chose the fries, but she upgraded them to “fajita fries” which she had seen on the menu. Imagine chili-cheese fries, only better!
When our platters arrived my mom immediately “stole” one of my onion rings. She loves a good onion ring and kind of judges a place by how good the onion rings are.
“Oh, my gosh!” was heard as she took the first bite. She said these were some of the best onion rings she’s ever eaten.
From the hush puppies (excellent), the onion rings (amazing) to fajita fries (incredible, who thought those up?) to the fried catfish and fried shrimp, the entire meal was delicious!
With large portions sizes, neither of us finished our meal.
I said at the beginning that it was 22.3 miles from my house to Hawkins Tasty Food. Well, it was well worth the drive. At only 10 minutes from where I work, I can see me returning for an early dinner soon.
There’s a reason this highly reviewed,
family-owned business has earned such a strong reputation and after our first visit, it’s easy to see why!
From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed. The menu was easy to navigate, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful in recommending food options. The entire ordering process was smooth and efficient.
I went with the half Philly cheesesteak and half traditional spicy garlic wings, with a side of onion rings. Let me just say, “WOW!”
Everything was fresh, hot, and clearly made to order. The flavors were spot on, and it was one of the best combos I’ve had in a long time, especially paired with a couple sides of ranch.
What made the experience even better was the fun I had afterward with my wife and son. We enjoyed playing on the stuffed animal claw machine they had inside the restaurant. It really made the visit feel special and added a personal touch to the whole outing.
We’re already looking forward to our next visit. Big thank you to the Hawkins family for the great food and friendly atmosphere. You’ve definitely gained a new regular!
