For today’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure we decided to take a chance on a restaurant that Apple Maps says is permanently closed. (It was wrong.) The RockStarr BBQ Restaurant is located in Reeder’s Alley, which is a destination of its own. Reeder’s Alley is a neighborhood of the oldest buildings in Helena, Montana. A red brick walkway runs up the hill right through the middle of these log and red brick buildings. We parked at the bottom of the hill and noticed the sign showing us we were there. But looking around we couldn’t tell which of these cool old buildings was RockStarr BBQ. The owner, Chris, noticed us looking around and greeted us from the newly built deck at the top of a long lumber stairway. We slowly ascended the stairway, stopping briefly at the landing to catch our breath. Once we reached the deck, Chris helpfully advised us that there was a better way to get there. He said, “Next time you come, park in the neighborhood on top of the hill and take the brick walkway down to us.” He also advised us that we could avoid the stairs by going behind the restaurant and walking down the gently sloped brick alley. Which we did after our visit.
After we entered the restaurant, Chris began explaining the menu options and offered a few recommendations. He also gave me a sample from his freshly cut brisket. The meat was super tender and flavorful. When I hesitated on my order commenting, “I’m torn between a pulled pork sandwich and the pulled pork nachos.” He immediately spoke up, “then you want the nachos.” So that’s what I ordered. As he rang me up he noticed my Marine Corps hat and gave me a nice veterans discount, which I didn’t ask for, but always appreciate.
As we sat and waited for our food Chris chatted with us about the history of Reeder’s Alley and of his restaurant. He started with a food truck about nine years ago and has been in this building for about two years. He had to rebuild the stairs and added on the deck which he’s really excited about for this summer.
Otto ordered a plate of brisket with baked beans and slaw on the side. At one point during the meal, he paused long enough to look up and enthusiastically state, “This is REALLY good!”
As mentioned, I had ordered the nachos with pulled pork on top. The nachos were covered with pulled pork, a special cheese sauce that Chris makes himself, sliced black olives, mild jalapeños, pickled onions (one of Chris’s specialties, “I put them in everything.”), fresh salsa, and a sprinkling of Mexican Cotija cheese. The flavors all blended together for a uniquely wonderful taste experience.
The background music was softly playing in the background. Not too loud. We could easily carry on a a conversation. In fact, the relaxed, casual atmosphere made it feel like we were sitting at the kitchen counter at an old friend’s house, watching him prepare a special meal just for us. And I feel like we found a new friend today.
Chris also operates two food trucks which you can find on the summer food truck circuit. Be sure to check them out when you spot them at the fair or in the festivals.
Pride in his food is evident in everything that Chris does in running his restaurant, from the presentation to the customer service. You could easily say that Chris Starr is the RockStarr of BBQ in his little restaurant on top of the hill in Reeder’s Alley.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We got the nachos and the mac and cheese and it was killer. The brisket came off the smoker right before we ordered and man that was good. Holy moly get the brisket!
Also recommend the deck for sitting. They also serve beer!
