I really hate writing this review, especially for a place I have known about since 2000. I even left a 5 star review back in 2022 after a good dine in visit. Unfortunately, this recent takeout order in January 2026 was bad enough that most of it ended up in the trash.
Nothing about the food felt fresh. The chicken was dry and borderline inedible. I ordered Kung Pao chicken and received something completely different, with none of the flavor you would expect. The beef teriyaki was also dry, tough, and tasteless. There honestly was not a single item we enjoyed.
What made this even more concerning was the atmosphere. It was dinner time on a Saturday evening and the restaurant appeared to have only one customer. That alone was surprising. Between that and the quality of the food, it felt like a place that may have already seen its better days.
Parking has also become an issue. The lot is shared and free in the evenings, which often means there is little to no parking available for actual restaurant guests. That has always been inconvenient, but combined with this experience, it adds to the overall frustration.
For the amount of money spent, this was extremely disappointing. When long time customers are throwing most of the food away, that says a lot. I never expected to write a review like this for Szechuan Taste, but after this experience, I am not confident I would return, even for dine in.

This review is for the Sunday buffet only and not ordering off the full menu, although I can’t imagine it being any different as far as a total lack of taste and flavor is concerned. Very disappointed with the whole experience. Limited offerings, some 13 trays. Hot and Sour soup was hot, but no heat nor use of vinegar. Spring roll was lame. Coral Shrimp & General Tso’s chicken were the winners. All the rest had no spice, herbs or flavorings. Ever hear of ginger, garlic, oyster sauce, Five spice? Staff were pleasant, good in removing empty plates and filling of food trays. Sadly, will never return. Darn it.

The food was ok about 6/10. Not really an authentic Schezuan restaurant. I read the reviews for coming there and it was 4.5 so it was very misleading when we got there I was expecting a bit more quality and more authenticity in terms of the dishes and all we got was sort of this blah Chinese food. The Dan Dan noodles had no Schezuan peppercorn and the green beans are supposed to be dry and they’re drenched in some sauce. So it’s not authentic Chinese at all. Not bad but not great.

On Christmas 2024, I was completely alone and far from any family or friends, in this area for work. I had scraped together enough money for a small meal from this restaurant—the only one in Exeter which appeared to be open—and went there to make the purchase. I was told that on Christmas they do not do the special combination plates on Christmas and that I would need to order a la carte. I was less than a dollar short. I went hungry that Christmas. Walking out of this restaurant hungry, cold, and empty-handed was one of the most dejected, humiliating experiences of my life.

We did a takeout order. This is the first time we have gone to this restaurant. We are from out of town. We ordered the General Tsao spicy combination With chicken and shrimp for two people. The portion was barely enough to even satisfy one person let alone too. The dish was not spicy at all. The menu said the shrimp was jumbo. That was a joke. The chicken Was heavily coded with breading and barely any chicken inside. They were also extremely hard and crunchy. We were very dissatisfied. Most Asian restaurants give you large proportions of food. This one did not measure up at all.
