We dine here pretty regularly about once a week or every other week. Service is usually fine. The staff is young and, from my perspective, they generally do their best.
This visit was different. About halfway through my first bowl, I noticed a dead fly in my soup. It was fully cooked, so I assume it came in with the vegetables or ingredients and had been there the entire time. Obviously, that was pretty gross.
That said, I wasn’t offended and didn’t blame the employees. These things can happen, and I don’t expect staff to be able to control every variable. I mainly wanted to let them know so they were aware.
I mentioned it to our server who was actually outstanding and he said he’d get the manager. The manager came over (an older gentleman) and immediately asked, “What’s the problem?” I explained that I didn’t have a problem, I was just informing them that there was a fly in the food.
His response was, “Well, what do you want me to do?”
That caught me off guard. At a minimum, I expected an apology or some acknowledgment that this was unpleasant. Instead, he seemed irritated. After an awkward pause, he said he could remove one bowl from the bill.
I told him that was fine, but again, my intent was simply to inform them.
His reaction felt dismissive and almost annoyed, which was surprising and disappointing. Because of how the situation was handled – not the incident itself, it makes me not want to return.
For that reason, I’m giving Shabuya a one-star rating.
We greatly appreciate all the staffs immediate action both on cleaning used dishes and always asking if we wanted to order more.
Beyond stoked having our nine year anniversary here and looking forward to our next visit!
Thanks again Aisha for ensuring we had a Blast!!
Also, no reservations, they have a waitlist. Recommend going at open with an appetite.
There are a few broths to choose from, and this time I got the tonkatsu. The tonkatsu was well flavored and stood on its own, something that I feel like my past experiences at Ala Moana were lackluster with bland broth. My friend got the miso, which I did notice that when refilling with their pitchers of broth, the miso was not well mixed and accumulated at the bottom. Suggest the restaurant give it a swirl before refilling miso broths.
I’m not sure if the meat options have changed consistently, but I felt like there were more premium meat options here. They do slice them thin and each platter only holds so much, so a few rounds are definitely in order. Overall quality of beef and pork meats were good.
There are also ayce appetizers, of which we had the edamame (plain and garlic), japchae, volcano karaage, and takoyaki. All were very good, especially the takoyaki although mostly filler. Unfortunately the tempura options weren’t available, not sure what that was about as they had only just opened for the day.
Parking is plentiful, but will get packed as the restaurant does. I do enjoy going back, but if I had to wait an hour+ I’d probably move on elsewhere. Oh one con I noticed by the end of the meal was that there were a ton of flies swarming our area. Not sure if that had to do with those waiting in the lobby keeping the doors open, but some fly control is needed.
I did have reservations that this location would have less options than the bigger older one, but I was surprised to see they actually had more! The service was great, although a bit slow because it was a grand opening, so I’m sure thing will slow down a bit in the next couple of weeks. The wais was about an hour which is typical of Shabuya in Ala Moana and since this was the grand opening, I expected it to be incredibly busy anyways.
The food was outstanding and we all left very full. I will absolutely be back to this location!
