I meant to write this review after my first visit. This location has restored my faith in J. Gumbo. I love Cajun food and when the original location opened I was in there all the time. But after the owner began his franchise, it would appear that the oversight was lacking and as a result many of the locations declined in quality and value. When I went into the Middletown location, I was hoping for the best and I was not disappointed. The food at this location was wonderful. It had ample sauce and the flavor was exactly what I was hoping for. I ordered an assortment of dishes. I got the crawfish etouffee and asked that a little extra spice be added. And she did exactly that! I also got the drunken chicken, voodoo chicken and the jambalaya. I’m not even a fan of bread pudding but I decided to try it and even that was great. I have found good Cajun food to be difficult to find in Louisville. I had tried LouLou downtown and spent over $100 for takeout only to be bitterly disappointed. That food was low flavor, watered down, and look disgusting. So when I brought J. Gumbo’s home my son said he was afraid. Lol. He thought for some reason that I might have went back to LouLou. I told him that I decided to try this new location (new to me) and after he tried it he said it was delicious. Everything that I got there was wonderful and the owner of the location is just a delightful person. She’s so friendly and she told me that the number that’s on the website, I could text her there with my order in advance so next time I didn’t have to wait. I actually left the restaurant that day, pulled over to sample the food before driving off, and it was so good that I had to text her immediately and let her know that I would be driving out of my way in the future just to come get food from her location. That’s how good it is! I went back for a second visit and you know, sometimes you go back for that second visit and you end up finding out that the first one was a fluke, but luckily not for me. The food was just as delicious and I feel like it’s a great value. I measure value in how much enjoyment I got out of the product and so for the price, this place is a gold mine. I live within walking distance of a J Gumbo establishment and this Middletown location is about 20 to 25 minutes from my house but I will choose it every time I want Cajun.

J Gumbos Middletown is great. I’ve already eaten there twice and been blown away both times. The first time, I called ahead and my food was ready to go when I walked in. The second time, I walked in and said “what’s good” and she gave me samples of 3 different dishes. I’ve had the Bumblebee Stew and the Bourbon Street Chicken. Both were plenty to have for two meals, so ultimately a good deal too. I highly recommend J Gumbos!

I got the Voodoo Chicken and Bumblebee Stew and was honestly stunned by how good it was. I even liked the crawfish cheese dip, which normally I am not super big on seafood! Portions were also HUGE and will definitely get a second meal out of it. This is a carry-out only joint but the employee was very helpful and super sweet! Will definitely be back.

Denise was friendly and courteous. I called in an order of the white chili to pickup on my break. My order was hot and ready. The chili was very good. Seasoned just right and there is so much food in a serving. At least 2 meals worth. Already decideding what to choose next.

This is a takeout only place but I loved the food and the convenience of pickup. It’s a perfect spot to pick up quick lunch or dinner. The owner was really sweet and offered free samples. I’ll definitely be going again and will be recommending it to my coworkers. The food was delicious and it was good size portion. She even gave an extra slice of bread which was delicious as well. Go try this and you won’t be disappointed!!

It’s a hole-in-the-wall kind of joint run by a super sweet lady who actually lived in NOLA. She will offer you free samples so you can try those dishes you just aren’t sure about buying yet. All the dishes I tried were fantastic! I ordered the Voodoo Chicken and my hubby got the red beans and rice. We loved our food! Great sized portions, loaded with flavor, and prices just right. There’s no dine in, which is fine for me because I don’t like crowds, lol. Overall a fantastic place and I guarantee we will be back soon!
