What happened to Mr.Chau’s Chinese Fast Food? : r/SanJose – Reddit

I can’t stand Panda Express. It feels like a McDonalds opened a Chinese restaurant.

Even the service from the staff members are awesome, the food just doesn’t live up to my expectations. I understand that this is the very last Mr. Chau’s location ever, but the food tastes horrible, the orange chicken smells like chlorine, and I literally lost my appetite after a few bites. But the restaurant does give retro vibes

It’s been years since I’ve had Mr.Chau’s, I thought they were all gone but I’m happy I found this one. It’s not fully as good as it used to be but it’s still really delicious. A lot of the sauces and flavors taste the same. I just wish they had more options to choose from but I love that they serve you great size portions. My favorites are the House Chicken and the 5 flavor Chicken.

My son had a taste for Chinese food so we opted for Mr.Chaus. The food at first glance looks very appetizing. I got the 2 entree 1 side combo. We ordered orange chicken, 5 flavor chicken & chow mein. I also ordered egg rolls(2 per order). Total was about $19. Which is not bad considering the price of everything nowadays. But unfortunately the flavor was NOT there! EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was bland. Absolutely no flavor of any kind. The orange chicken didn’t taste like orange chicken and the 5 flavor chicken didn’t even have 1 flavor at that. I had to drench the chow mein in soy sauce to try to make it better but it just wasn’t there. The food taste fresh but the flavor was just not there. The egg rolls taste fresh as well but lacked flavor as well.

Like going back to the 90’s. I never went to Mr. Chau’s as a kid despite memorizing their entire commercial. Positive experience. Decent price, big portions, quick dirty greasy chinese food. Tastes like childhood.

This is hands down the best chinese fast food place in San Jose. I have gone to this restaurant for YEARRRRSSS and has never disappointed and the staff is always nice especially this one sweet Mexican lady she’s the best. I always get honey chicken and daichin chicken. Once you try this food you’ll never go back to Panda Express. On my momma !

Come here if you want bugs inside your food ! Happened to me on 10/2/25 , I’ve been coming here since it’s been open, sad to say I will not be returning here ever and will share with family & friends about my experience. Normally I would add soy sauce and siracha but I’m glad this day I didn’t, I noticed it and immediately lost my appetite. I don’t eat meat so it was not that , you can notice that the lines are the body, you can see the eyes and intenas. When I called them to let them know they just said come get your money back, no apology, they were not surprised. No shock to them means this happens regularly. SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN !

For years, I thought that the only remaining Mr. Chau’s was the one on El Camino in Santa Clara. That place was garbage, and it looks like it was permanently closed.

Luckily, I randomly stumbled upon this location a couple weeks ago, and I decided to give it a chance. I’ve already been back twice, and I’m coming from San Francisco.

The food is exactly what I remember, and hits the spot that I’ve been craving. It also triggers nostalgia for my youth which doesn’t happen often anymore with how much SJ has changed.

Don’t go here if you are craving Chinese food. The chicken doesn’t even taste like chicken. The Kung Pao and orange chicken was horrible. It’s has more of a Mexican seasoning than Chinese.

The Five Flavor Chicken is outstanding…noodles are tasty, but I prefer just getting a side order of the chicken. All their meat choices look really good. There are always terrific portions the staff gives you, and the staff are very nice and always keep their place clean. One of the few Mr. Chau’s left in the area – I’m very glad it’s close to you where I live.
