Everyone is laid-back and chill.
Fridays nights is place to be. Vince the owner; has done a great job!
My main issue is the reason I went there: the karaoke.
Despite claiming to start at 9 pm, 10 pm rolled around with nary a word from the KJ. Eventually I asked the bartender and she said just go up and put in a song. Since no one else had and everyone seemed to be just vibing (and again, there was no announcement of anything from the KJ requesting singers) I waited until someone else did.
So while they were singing, I went up to put in a song, and the KJ informed me that they were doing mostly R&B that evening. I pondered that for a moment and prepared to head out (the only R&B songs I could think of offhand that I might even be slightly able to sing were by R Kelly, and no fricking way was I doing that). The KJ stopped me and they convinced me to stay since it was only “mostly”. I put in my standard initial Sinatra song while they said they love Sinatra (obviously). Then I went back to my stool and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Now, part of the reason why I didn’t check on the order was that for some reason, despite there being over a dozen unique singers, the KJ was playing a full song between each individual. An appropriate move if there’s very few singers, or if there’s a large dance crowd and dance songs need to be played.
But not just…. because.
I’ve been to literally dozens of karaoke joints and I’ve never seen this happen. More than doubled the length of the rotation for no discernable reason. No one seemed to care about the music.
The other reason is while I was filling out my slip someone gave the KJ a huge stack of slips for multiple people. I just figured the rotation was long (and it was).
Until I noticed the repeat singers.
I remarked to the bartender than I thought I got skipped, and she checked, confirming the KJ no longer had the slip I’d filled out in front of them after a conversation with them about the genre. The bartender brought me a new slip and pencil to fill it out.
The pencil had no lead.
At this point I took it as a sign that karaoke was not in my cards for the evening. Yeah I easily could have gone back up to the KJ and filled out another slip with a working pencil, but honestly…why? I’d arrived around 9 pm, it was then after midnight and I hadn’t even done my warm-up song yet (if you’ve done a lot of karaoke, you know how that is).
So I just went home. Complete waste of an evening.
I usually drink more than double what I wound up drinking, but the bartender was too overworked to serve her patrons properly (not her fault, the owners for scheduling poorly).
The karaoke mixup was 100% the KJ’e fault, and a good, attentive KJ would have noticed that the person they convinced to stay and who filled out a slip **in front of them** had not sung by the time repeat singers were being called. I’m easily noticeable and rememberable, I walk with a cane and am not like, old old. And it’s not like they didn’t have time to figure out what went wrong, they were inexplicably playing songs between each singer. Plenty of downtime.
I’m a dad of 3 kids 6 and under, so my ability to actually get out socially is basically nil, and this ruined probably the only night I’ll go out alone this year.
So yeah, if you like good wings and mediocre service (again because of cheap scheduling by the owners, the individual bartender was great for what she had to deal with), go ahead and go to shotskis.
If you’re looking for a good karaoke experience and a well staffed bar, I recommend going literally anywhere else.
