Let me first address the reviews complaining about portion size and quality. Comments like, “I’d think you’d get more.” Or “It was so gross, I wasted more food than I ate.” Lastly, “the food on the buffet looked like last nights left overs or pan scrapings.”

First of all, it’s a buffet, hot pot and Korean bbq. They have a menu, and you can order off the menu. But, the reviews referenced the buffet, soup and hot pot. It’s all you can eat, so if you didn’t get enough, that’s on you! And if you’re wasting food, then why do you keep going back and filling your plate. You saw the buffet and if it looked terrible as you have said, why did you sit down and eat and allegedly get sick or food poisoning. I call BS. Why not include pics of these disgusting claims? Also, claims about you cant read buffet labels. Well, they aren’t written in Chinese. The labels are computer printed. If you aren’t sure what you’re reading, why not ask?

On with my review. We were really grateful that a Hot Pot and Korean BBQ opened in GJ. We live over an hour away and when we come to GJ, we go to Taste of Chang’An. If you’re unfamiliar with Hot Pot or Korean BBQ, both meals are prepare yourself. Meaning you cook your food at your table. You grab your choices from the buffet and return to your table and combine your sauces, flavors and seasonings from the condiments bar. They have vegetarian, lamb, beef, pork, chicken, seafood. They include on the buffet rotating items like Sesame, Orange and Sweet and Sour Chicken. Slow cooked braised beef. Pepper Corn green beans, noodles, egg rolls, crab Rangoon and much more.

Korean BBQ and Hot Pot are a festive type preparations, that are intended for people to gather, cook and converse. A family style way of everyone bringing things to the table and cooking and trying all the variations Taste of Chang’An has to offer. It’s a step out of your norms and to get a little adventurous with your food. If that isn’t your “cup of tea,” then order off the menu, but don’t hammer the restaurant because you had to cook your food. You’re missing the point. Should’ve done your homework before going there.

Taste of Chang’An is doing a really good job, friendly, attentive and more exciting way to enjoy a meal. If you’re unsure of what to do, how to set things up; they’d be happy to show you. Ask for the owner, Chang, he is always there and very friendly.

As someone from China, I found this restaurant incredibly authentic and delicious! After a full day of hiking in Colorado National Monument, we were absolutely starving, and this place hit the spot. The ingredients were fresh, the flavors were spot on, and everything was very satisfying.

For just $24.99, you get an all-you-can-eat experience that includes both hotpot and BBQ. You can choose whatever ingredients you like, in any amount, and cook them right at your own table. The variety and freedom made the meal really enjoyable.

The staff were super friendly and welcoming. They kept checking in to see if we wanted more BBQ, and they brought everything out quickly with a smile. Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic Chinese flavors and a fun dining experience!

What a fabulous experience tonight at Taste of Chang’An. My husband and I got hot pot and were lucky enough to sample some things from the buffet hot bar also. Everything was fresh and delicious. The hot pot broths were especially noteworthy for their variety and incredible flavors (the tomato rocks). The short ribs are excellent. Everyone we spoke to was so friendly and accommodating. If we lived in town we would be here all the time!

A hidden gem! Great customer service, you get to choose 3 options.
1Hot Pot: meat and vegetables are fresh and delicious.
2 All you can eat buffet: food is cooked as it runs out. Great flavor and variety. You also get dessert and ice cream.
3. A la carte
If your stopping by or in the area highly recommend this place.

Edit: 2nd visit we just did the buffet. One of the best values in town for a family dinner. Under 70 bucks for our family of 5 + baby, and the food was fresh and good tasting. We will definitely be back, so I increased the rating to 5 stars. It would be good if they had some tables without the hot pot burners for people that just love the buffet (same as Dragon treasure used to be).

What great potential! This was our first ever “hot pot” experience and we had no idea what to expect or how to do it, but we heard this was the same as the ownership of Dragon Treasure which was one of our favorite restaurants so we tried it. We were greeted by a super enthusiastic and friendly waitress who took us around and explained how it worked and got our hot pots and grill started warming up. That experience alone was worth the total bill- we really had fun learning about it and figuring out how to put the soup together and get the right meats. She was so much fun. Then, we found out our table didn’t work – we tried diligently for 10 or so minutes to get it hot, and it kept beeping and flashing an error message without heating up so we had to move tables. Then our servers changed- there were a few different folks checking on us, but not regularly, any more. Not knowing what we were doing, we just had to throw things on the grill and ended up burning a lot of it because we didn’t realize we were supposed to be spraying oil on it (the liquid in the sprayer was clear, thought it was water — my bad). And everything was super flavorless. Turns out there is a seasoning station, but we didn’t go through that part of the training; assuming the meat that would be delivered to us would at least be salted and peppered. So the good news is that next time is going to be so much better because now we know we need to preheat the grill and season the meat, plus we have some experience with the broth flavors we like and don’t like. We’ll be able to cook much better tasting food. I think if they would focus a bit on the newbie, this place would be a lot busier. The other almost heartbreaking part is how awesome the reasonable “dragon treasure buffet” is getting overshadowed by the hot pot experience. That $13 buffet was a gem in orchard mesa and I just don’t see how it integrates with a higher end hot pot experience. They don’t work well together – because if you want to come in for a good tasting inexpensive buffet, your table space is totally limited by the burners and if you’re there for bbq and hot pot, inexpensive chinese buffet doesn’t really add to your experience. The hot pot was cool, and the 26 dollar price seemed very reasonable- especially if we knew what we were doing (and considering it includes seafood!). The 13 dollar chinese buffet just doesn’t fit with the hot pot experience. If I want a great value, we love that chinese buffet. If we want to spend more and really have an experience, that’s the hot pot. Together, the chinese buffet adds nothing to the hot pot; almost cheapens the experience — and the hot pot ruins the buffet because so much of the table space is taken up by burners and a grill. I don’t know if GJ can support any more hot pot restaurants, but I know the inexpensive+good quality+friendly staff model of Dragon Treasure was well received and they had many years of success. I hope they focus on what has worked; we really want to see the folks that made dragon treasure successful do the same here.

We enjoy everything about this restaurant. There were some growing pains in the beginning and they have continued to improve everything each time we come. The lunch hot pot and buffet price is affordable and the food is so good, we have started coming every two weeks and sometimes more. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is consistently good. They offer multiple broth choices as well as many veggie and meat options. This is one of our favorite places to eat regularly. If you haven’t tried Taste of Chang’An, you should give it a try!

I really wanted to like this place, but the buffet was a major disappointment. While the food was technically “hot,” it felt like I was eating the absolute bottom of the barrel.
Most of the trays were down to the last spoonful. I might have just stopped in at a bad time (after 5PM on a Monday)?
The waiter was super friendly and helpful.
Affordable.

All the food is good, and the decoration style is very Asian, combining classical and modern. The only shortcoming is that the price is a little too low. I doubt how the operator can make a profit at such a low price. I will definitely come back. I will recommend all my friends and family to come here. It deserves to be seen by more people.
