Is Taiwan Cafe still awesome? – Boston – Reddit

37 votes, 17 comments. Lived in Boston until 2011. Used to go to Taiwan Cafe in Chinatown a lot. Is it still there? How’s the food now?

My friends kept raving about it, so I ordered for early dinner. Pretty good deal for the lunch special even with Uber eats fees. You get a lot of rice and soup with the entrees. Calamari and celery dish portion a lot less than the other two, which makes sense. Anyway the food is mostly decent, very homestyle

hot and sour soup: just passable, but not very good. Very low acidity and has a bitter oil aspect

Celery and calamari: there are peppers scattered in but taste is a basic sugar sweet sauce. Calamari is fishier than expected but it’s tolerable.

Sichuan spiced fish: not much spices in the taste, but the fry was done well and fish is tender. I popped it into the air fryer to crisp up. Would re-order

Twice cooked pork: sauce good, could be more spicy like the others. veggies are a bit mushy though. Would possibly re-order.

The food was very flavorful, great variety, came out within 10 minutes of ordering. We ordered pork soup, dumplings, pork and chive dumplings, vegetarian fried rice (group favorite), Taiwanese, beef, fried tofu, noodles with beef and vegetables, and spicy cucumbers. The atmosphere is busy, loud, slightly crowded. Need reservations. The table came with green tea that we really enjoyed in order a second pot.

Incredibly flavorful xiao long bao!
Beef noodle soup was great too.
Very friendly staff, quick service. It got crowded, but no problem getting a table on a Saturday night.

Came by Taiwan Cafe awhile back.

Decent spot for some asian eats. They were able to host a larger party.

I do think they were close to Taiwanese flavors but maybe at best 70-75%. But for the area, definitely one of the main spots.

Hectic during peak hours.

No nonsense restaurant serving very well seasoned Chinese food. The menu is indeed overwhelming, but our choice of the xiaolongbao, beef, tofu, and fried pork was on point. Also just found out through news on the wall that the restaurant has been there from as long as 1999!

We had the spicy beef noodle soup which was so good. Beef was tender and flavorful. Broth was also delicious and spicy. XLB had good broth and dumpling skin was not too thick. Atmosphere is a “whole in the wall” vibe. But the food delivers!

Great place for casual dining. We feel that the photos on Google review are missing a Taiwanese staple – beef noodle soup. Large portion, beef is tender and flavorful, the noodles have a slight bite yet soft, the soup had proper mid-level spiciness. Highly recommend.

The Szechuan fish in oil dish came sizzling hot and was spicy but not enough compared to what I’ve had in other Sichuan places. The red chilli peppers seemed a bit dry too but the presentation was impeccable.
The truffle dumplings were a good innovation as well. I would like to give this place another try!

What is going on? Fried pork intestine?! Oyster pancake?! Stinky tofu that actually smells?!!!? May not be for the faint of heart, but if you want something culinary out there and a good helping of authenticity, this is the place. Oh yeah. Beef Noodle Soup is the one to get. Tastes like nostalgia. Here’s a photo of the intestines, btw. Have fun!
