We recently visited a new Mediterranean restaurant in San Mateo for dinner. When we arrived, the place wasn’t too busy. Although the restaurant is relatively small, it features a pleasant bar area. Interior is very nice. The chair may be need more cushion.

They offer a variety of white and red wines, but it seems they don’t serve cocktails. The menu boasts plenty of options to choose from. We ordered the spread combination, sauted veggie dish, souvlakis tenderloin, souvlakis chicken, and seafood paella. The spread combination came with four types of spreads, all of which were delicious, and the pita bread was still warm.

The veggie dish was well-cooked, not overly soft, and the chicken was tender though slightly salty. The tenderloin was tasty, but some parts were a bit tough; a knife for cutting the tenderloin would have been appreciated. The seafood paella was flavorful, but I believe it would be better without the chicken, as it is a seafood dish. The chicken itself was tender, but all-seafood paella would be good enouugh.
Overalk the price is reasonable.
We ended our meal with a chocolate lava cake, which was delightful and served warm. Overall, it was a good dinner with excellent service.

I will note that the food at this location is solid and the ambiance is nice. The negative review is for the service. I had the tenderloin plate and it was very good (note the portion is a bit on the smaller side since the burnt tomatoes and onions are removed when you order a plate). My friends had the branzino, bahche burger, and lamb burger and enjoyed their meals as well.

After our meal ended, one of the waitresses (black hair, tattoo on her neck) came over and handed me the kiosk to input the tip. We had a party of 5 and the bill was $200 not including 4 glasses of wine ($57 total) so I tipped $30. The waitress looked at the screen and said the minimum tip was 20% for large parties. She then made me choose the 20% option on the screen. Note that this 20% tip option also includes a tip on the tax. I did not want to make a scene so I just paid that amount.

However, neither the menu nor the website mention a minimum gratuity. I called the following day and spoke to the manager and was informed that there is a minimum tip of 18% expected for parties of 6 or more (but no automatic gratuity for parties under 6). Luckily he was able to resolve the situation over the phone.

Overall, I would say this restaurant has good food and is worth a try but you should be careful when paying the bill to make sure you are not getting forced / bullied into tipping more by the waitstaff.

The Caesar was $16 (ordered at Fieldwork). What showed up was a side salad. Ridiculous! I call shenanigans. Who said their prices were “reasonable”?

$24 burger was just OK. Why offer me cooking temperature choices in the Toast app if you’re going to ignore my “medium rare” and then serve me a medium to medium well burger? Flavors were nothing special, burger under seasoned, tomatoes not ripe. Bacon was tasty, though (most redeeming quality in this otherwise average burger).

If the salad had been $8, and the burger $18, I wouldn’t have been motivated to post.

My experience this night, ordering from Fieldwork? Average at best.

Overall, the food was very good! The texture of the falafel, spanakopita, and grilled fish was excellent. I feel like the presentation/special something was missing relative to other medditarranean places of a similar price–youll notice all 4 dishes we ordered were simply garnished with arugula and a sauce container. This place is brand new so the service is understandably a work in progress. Great atmosphere and decent drinks (no liquor license).

Estefania was an absolute gem! From the moment I walked in, she acknowledged me and made sure both me and my kids were taken care of right away. Her warm and attentive service really set the tone for a great dining experience (:
The atmosphere here is amazing! Welcoming, vibrant, and perfect for families or just a nice night out. The entire team was fantastic, and I can’t forget to shout out the back of house (BOH) team, the food was delicious! You can really tell they put love into every dish. This was my second visit, and I had to come back because I truly enjoyed it the first time. The owner even stopped by to check in, which shows how much they care about their guests. Best of all? It’s right down the street from my house. I’m so lucky to have such a great spot nearby. I already love this place, and I’m looking forward to coming back again and again!

Wow, everything was great from start to finish. We celebrated my birthday here tonight; Yousef and his staff were so kind and accommodating. The restaurant is quaint yet comfortable and their hospitality really makes you feel at home. All of the food was delicious, there was a great wine selection and even Booch Craft on draft. Seamless service our entire visit. Thank you so much for the great experience! Can’t wait to bring more friends here! 🙂

Bahche is a brilliant new upscale Mezze Greek & Mediterranean restaurant / wine bar in San Mateo’s Hillsdale neighborhood.

This particular side of San Mateo is going through some renovations, there are a couple of new venues opening in the surrounding area. I hope they are as good as Bahche! I met up with my mate for lunch on a rather warm Monday afternoon and was very happy with our choice of venue. I was a bit skeptical of the glowing reviews, but thought we’d give it a shot. We don’t have Greek or Mediterranean food that often.

While it’s not the largest of venues, Bahche is very welcoming with its high ceilings and natural light. There is plenty of counter seating at the bar and a handful of tables along the wall. There was some outdoor seating as well, but in this heatwave… forget about it! Plenty of parking available around the neighborhood. I’m not sure if there is a garage close by.

We choose to order a couple of appetizers and share a main dish. We weren’t sure of the portion sizes and didn’t want to go overboard. We
also planned to head downtown afterwards and grab some dessert… so had to leave some room for that sweet tooth.

#MediterraneanEats:
MEZZES:
~ SPREAD COMBINATION – 5/5
hummus – 4.5/5
tzatziki – 4/5
melitzanosalata – 4.5/5
muhammara – 4.5/5
An absolutely brilliant opportunity to sample a healthy variety of spreads. All of them were delish! They refilled out Pita when we needed more.

~ OCTAPODAKI – 5/5
The Octopus was cooked perfectly ; slightly charred, but soft and tender. Served with Potatoes and some sauce. AMAZING! I wish this was a meal.

BAHCHE MAINS:
~ SEAFOOD PAELLA – 4.5/5
The main course we ended up sharing. The Paella had plenty of flavor, but I do wish it had a bit more seafood in it. I thought it was a bit heavier on the rice, which was still amazing and had plenty of flavor as well.

DESSERT:
~ BREAD PUDDING – 5/5
A perfect moist and warm spiced Brioche bread with Golden Raisins, Anglaise sauce (whatever that is) topped off with Vanilla Ice Cream.

The service was brilliant. We had the pleasure of interacting with Arlen; nice guy, attentive, efficient and knowledgeable without being overbearing. He suggested the Bread Pudding as a dessert. So goad we took up his recommendation.

Bahche hasn’t been open that long. There weren’t a lot of folks inside since they just opened up the lunch hours. I can’t wait to return and try the rest of the menu…

They have the best falafel that I have ever had, so moist and flavorful! The atmosphere is cozy, nice linnen napkins and the tables are close to one another. There is plenty of seating outside which is nice. Great stop to meet friends and enjoy good wine with good food. I went for dinner, but it is also very busy at lunch. The have a burger that has a vegan patty, but the bun is not vegan, and the aioli is not vegan, so it is not an appropriate dish for a person wanting a vegan or plantbased dish, but would be suited to a vegetarian. I ordered several food options and omitted the cheese or sauces and everything was good. I would eat here again.
