This is a cute, authentic spot right in downtown Monroe. We ordered take-out on a weeknight. The restaurant was empty when I picked up the food.

The food is authentic and full of flavor! Service is a lil slow but I’m sure it’s cuz everything is made fresh! The empanadas are so good, Topped with slaw, avocado, and cheese. We ordered the churrasco steak and asked for it medium, and it was well done:(
The rice and beans was so good, served with avocado and a really good pepper, cilantro and onion salad…
The typico breakfast was good.. not exactly what was pictured.. lol.. but actually I preferred the red beans instead of the black beans.. the pupusa was yummy. The eggs were fried to perfection, also came with chorizo and tortillas..

Staff is rude and they don’t care to satisfy their customers. Paid $10.00 for a small guacomole and large beans that was watery (it was awful) waste of money because we threw it out. By the way the only accept cash.

The restaurant needs some serious help. Service is near 0 with the acting server having negative knowledge on how to welcome guests, take orders, place orders, bring the food, cash out. The server mentioned at the beginning “prices will be variable” which is a good way of saying whatever I charge you is the price. It took 45min to receive the basic dishes and there were 4 people in the kitchen. No hay una experiencia mas horible que esta en todo Orange County.

As a Honduran i think the food is okay. Love to see some Honduras influences restaurants here but definitely needs better attention to costumer. Needs more drinks variety and definitely some music and there was no ac but please don’t expect this to be a dining in restaurant maybe more like take out so much potential but not effort.

Delicious more Honduras influence, employees extremely flexible and knowledgeable of foods willing to discuss or recommend items. We liked the food very much. Chicken and rice different but YUMMY. TOSTONES PERFECT, MADUROS sweet banana also very good. Pork chops tasty. Rice and beans YUMMY.

There was a reason this place closed. Foremost, the price-to-value was awful, and worse, so was the food. I went once, not that long after they’d opened, and that was all that anyone would have needed to judge. The owners never ran the place as if it was a business and didn’t much care about the end product. For $7, this is what you’d get: A pulled-pork sandwich on a very small potato roll with a side of cole slaw they’d purchased at the local supermarket. Quality of the pulled-pork was…well, not great at all. Basically, frozen and reheated as another reviewer had stated. As for service, if you liked being ignored you would have loved this place. People lament that there isn’t more variety around Monroe and that we’re surrounded by pizza, but the real problem are the places that figure that they offer an alternative and don’t need to do much else to stay in business. At least the pizza shops know they need to be competitive to keep their clientele; places like Smokey D’s and the two establishments that have occupied the Velvet Monkey’s location didn’t figure out how to make a consistently good product and all failed as a result. Hopefully someone else gets it right, but we definitely won’t miss Smokey D’s nor will anyone else.

We loved it…don’t judge a book by its cover, this place is small and very familiar. My friends are not used to this type of food, but once they try this typical home-made food, they were very happy!
It’s clean,a little too chilly, but delicious food..
