This is my second visit to Miss Toya’s in Gaithersburg. I visited the one in Silver Spring twice as well, but that review is for another day. My first visit to the Gaithersburg location (food to-go), the smothered pork chops were so salty that I couldn’t eat them, gravy was only thrown on the top so the second had no gravy, and the sides were mid-level.

A year later, I decided to give them another try. I ordered the Smothered Pork Chops, Cajun Rotisserie Chicken with sides of mac & cheese, yams, collard greens, cabbage, banana pudding, bread pudding and cornbread.

Pork Chops: Good! The gravy was different from the Silver Spring location (preferred SS’s gravy better but then their gravy was salty). I just can’t win. I would get this again since it improved on the sodium since my first visit. We like some seasoning, but don’t OD. Lol

Mac & Cheese: Terrible! And this is what prompted the review. I’ve never been more disappointed over some mac & cheese than I was with this. It was dry and bland. Silver Spring location has creamy, cheesy mac & cheese. This one wasn’t it.

Cajun Rotisserie chicken: Tasted more like rosemary or thyme than anything Cajun. I’d pass on this if I visit again. I wanted some Cajun flavor.

Yams, Collards, Cabbage, and Cornbread were all good! I was really surprised by the cabbage since I’ll usually choose collards, but the cabbage reigned supreme. Those yams and cornbread are sooo good! I also like the blueberry cornbread at the SS location.

Bread pudding: It’s just okay for me. Too thick, but it was better at this location than SS.

Banana pudding: It is mainly banana flavored pudding with some cookies and 3 to 4 bananas sliced on top. It wasn’t what I was expecting. My friend loved it, though.

Given I’ve tried two locations and perhaps they’re to have their own identity, but I was expecting “some” consistency with the food (taste, quality). It’s almost like I visited two different establishments with different names. I understand the menus may not be exactly the same, but you would at least expect the recipes to be similar for items available across several locations. Overall, it’s average. Given we don’t have many southern cuisines in the area, I guess this is what we get, buuuuttt….

Oh, Xeri, who packed up my food was nice!

My experience today was awful! When I arrived today 03/01/26, It took me 6 minutes to be greeted and an additional 4 minutes to get a glass of water. When the waitress asked to place my order, I ordered the ‘Miss Toyas Famous Fried Chicken’ with my 2 sides being the Yams and Mac & Cheese. Both the sides were very cold, and only the chicken was hot. I soon asked for a box and the check. And my waitresses response was
“How was everything?” I told her the food was cold. And all she said was “Oh, So you’re going to have to go home and heat it up?” … as if serving cold food to guest is the norm.

As I was leaving out the table across from me, noticed that I was filming content because I’m a content creator. They ask how my experience was and I told the table of 4 my food was very cold. They all agreed with me and told me their sides were very cold as well. They also mentioned that they drove two hours from Pennsylvania because they heard how good the food was, but we’re sorely disappointed by the service and the cold food.

Love trying food around the DMV!! Stumbled upon Miss Toya. It was honestly not that bad! The portions were good but for the sandwich it was a bit pricey but gave a lot of fries, wasn’t a huge fan of the fries but everything else was honestly delicious! Got the steak rolls and they were super yummy! The service was wonderful too, 9/10!

So. I took my baby out to this place that we’ve never been to before. Full disclosure. The food here was AMAZING. To the point that you know it’s good when the first thing you finish on your plate is the VEGETABLES. Those greens with the turkey in them? WITH THE JUICE!? OMG. The chicken was juicy, and piping HOT. And all I drunk was water. That’s all I needed. I have to definitely go back again, you know for RESEARCH purposes.

My husband and I were originally in the area for a different restaurant. Boy were we glad that that place was closed!

From the time we walked in, we were greeted by staff and made to feel right at home. We ordered the deviled egg with shrimp small plate, the seafood basket, and the famous fried chicken. The food was fresh, hot and SO FLAVORFUL!!

My husband and I split everything and walked out with to-go boxes. The portions are large and well worth the money. Everything was reasonably priced.

This place DID NOT disappoint. We will be back soon to try other items♥️

Stopped in here for the first time since we were passing through the area and we were so happy we did! We don’t have a bunch of restaurants like this in our neighborhood so we were excited to check it out and they did not disappoint.

The service team was very attentive, the food came pretty quickly, everything was hot and fresh with good portion sizes, and of course the flavors were amazing. Almost everyone in our group rated their meals 5/5.

If I’m back in the area again, I will definitely be coming back!

What a delightful little spot! The atmosphere feels like an upscale restaurant yet comfortable and pleasing. The staff are all excellent. We had a wobbly table and before we could bring attention to it, our server switched our table. The food is SUPERB. The plate sizes are big, could easily be shared by two people. I was told that each location has some different menu items to reflect that area. Perfect little date place and they serve alcoholic beverages. Also was informed by staff they will be doing brunch soon.

We got fried catfish n grits. Mambo sauced wings. Ox tails. Honey dipped fried salmon bits. And five cheese Mac. So delicious. The service alone will have me coming back.

Miss Toya’s Southern Kitchen at Rio Boardwalk in MD
If you’re looking for a Louisiana Creole Flavor Restaurant. This Location doesn’t offer Creole Flavor Meals.
We made a reservation at this location for at least twenty four guests and at the last minute they tried to say, they can’t support a party of twenty four guests. Thanks to the General Manager and the staff, they found a way to make it happen.
This place offers Appetizer, Entree’s, Lunch, Dinner, No Fountain Drinks, Only Can Soda, Bottle Juice and Cocktail Drinks, and Brunch Services. Our Food was somewhat okay, our Service was Basic, I’m assuming it was due to the size of our party, this location has express, that they cannot handle large parties. This Restaurant is small with a laid back, friendly and clean atmosphere. We had a Great Time Here! This location is surrounded by some Shops and Plenty of Entertainment that includes a Boardwalk, Pond, Paddle Boats and many other Attractions. This Restaurant is located in the Rio Lakefront Area and offers a Limited Amount of Street Parking along with a nearby Free Parking Garage. You can visit this Restaurant at 225 Boardwalk Pl, Gaithersburg, MD 20878

The food is pretty good at the restaurant, depending on what you order. We ordered a couple of items, and everything was good except for fried chicken. The chicken tasted old. The service was slow and we had to request items few times. They need to have more servers during peak hours. Overall we enjoyed our food.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had a catfish basket and the catfish was sooo fresh and plenty of it. The steak roll my husband had was a little small so probably need to order fries on the side. However there were enough fries for me to share mine with my husband so it worked out well. The prices were also reasonable. We were very happy with all of our food and would definitely come back. I wish we had taken pictures esp of the catfish basket but didn’t think about it till it was almost gone.
