Izakaya Fusion Grill Keitan is a late-night Japanese izakaya specializing in charcoal-grilled yakitori and binchotan barbecue. Every skewer is grilled over real Japanese binchotan for clean heat, deep aroma, and a crispy-outside, juicy-inside texture. Guest favorites include chicken thigh (negima), ribeye, pork belly, beef tongue, scallops with garlic vermicelli, and our signature grilled rice ball. Located in downtown San Mateo, Keitan offers a cozy sakura-style atmosphere and is a popular spot for gatherings and late-night dining. Whether you’re craving premium skewers, charcoal-grilled meats, or something warm and comforting, Keitan is here for you.

All their yakitoris were seasoned well and I loved both the salted and soy options. You order through a QR code using your phone so you won’t have any issues with flagging down a waitress whether you’re seated on the first or second floors.

Automated ordering, minimal server interaction (water, food delivery, check, take out boxes). Pretty efficient for just having one server.

Delicious food but portions are small, think of it as appetizers (tapas). If you dont order enough or want more of something, then you’ll have to wait.

Protip: Went on a Sunday evening, beers were BOGO and chicken skewers ar 30% off after 10pm

super yum! i had the garlic chili tonkatsu ramen and unagi chazuke and they were great! the chazuke was very satisfying and addicting to eat – the unagi was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a sweet sauce! i felt like the garlic chili tokatsu ramen was a bit overcooked but still very fragrant. a sleeper hit was the shishito pepper tempura – crispy and flavorful!

Yummy skewers in a chill setting that’s relaxing. With the Japanese ambience music plus the Japanese style wall AC, feeling like we are in Ginza . Worth the visit . Review without incentive goodies

We had a great meal at Izakaya Fusion Grill Keitan! Highlights included the crisp tempura shishito and okra, the rich and satisfying beef udon, and the flavorful mentaiko udon. The grilled ribeye with uni was indulgent and delicious, and the beef tongue and chicken heart were both cooked beautifully with great smoky flavor. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. A solid spot for a fun and tasty meal — would definitely come back to try even more from the menu!

Very nice to chill out either on hot summer days or cold winter nights. They have a huge variety of Asian desert, from shaved ice, tea, sorbet, to winter goodies like grass jelly and many more. Comfortable seating. No one comes and kicks you out right after you finish your desert. There’s usually a long line for the kiosk though. Once you pass that point, it doesn’t take long to get your desert.

New izakaya in San Mateo! Been three times so far and my only complaint is that they were very slow in my most recent visit. The food came out 1 at a time with at least 10 minutes between each which extended the eating time by an hour or so.

Be wary of the staff being behind, there was a large table that we wanted to sit at and they told us it was reserved. The party it was reserved for didn’t show up until we were done eating (about 3 hours later). Unfortunately the third time was not up to par with my first two times here.

My favorite item is the crispy eggplant, fried in strips and with sweet sour sauce. Their skewers are also well season (not too salty) and kept warm over a grill at the table.

It’s a smaller space and more intimate, typical of a traditional izakaya but it’s nice that it’s open later compared to alot of restaurants in the area.

I hope they continue to do good business and produce quality food. For a late night meal after work, it’s a great space.

I stopped by Izakaya Fusion Grill Keitan for some takeout, and while I waited, I tried one of their dishes and a beer—absolutely delicious. Bonus surprise: after 9pm, they offer a free beer with your order, so I ended up enjoying two cold ones. The service staff were attentive and made the whole experience pleasant. The food is flavorful and creative, though some dishes may be a bit adventurous for certain palates. Street parking is available nearby. Will definitely return!

Favorite was garlic Brussels sprouts and Rib Eye Steak. Recommend making a reservation. Wait staff were very sweet and gave good tips as to what to order.
