After working a 12 hour shift, I decided to stop by and get some tamales. For $6.38 each I would have expected more. They’re tiny and had more masa on the corn husk than the tamal itself. Not a lot of meat either. Definitely not worth it and will definitely not be coming again. It was just una miseria de tamales.

This place is a casual fast food style atmosphere with great food. We’ve been to Abelardo’s numerous times and they never disappoint. We’ve done both dine in and drive through and had pleasant experiences with them both. Our favorites are the 2 carne asada burritos under the combinations menu, the street tacos and the steak super fries.

Authentic & delicious so glad to try this place! Torta fish was good with soft bread. Jamaica (hibiscus)juice, apple churros delightful. Variety of yummy sauces is a bonus. Will be back to try others from their large menu offerings!

Wow, we waited for this to open for the longest time, and it’s well worth the wait. We have been 4 times now, and I think I have a good sense of the place now. If I could give half stars, I might take off half a star simply because the place is new, and sometimes it seems they are still working out the kinks.

To know before you go: this is a counter service restaurant, and there is a drive-through as well. We have only dined in so far, so I can not comment on the drive-through. As it’s counter service, there is serve yourself soft drinks and a small salsa bar with some really tasty salsa options. The interior is nice and new, and my wife and I love the flower designs of the seating and booths. 4 trips in, and it’s always seemed nice and clean to us.

To our surprise, being counter service, they brought us complimentary basket of hot out the fryer chips. Only once, when they were much busier, did they forget to give us chips (thus my saying they are still working out the kinslks)

Now, to the food. Fantastic. The portions are huge, and the costs are great, so you really feel it’s a much better deal than pretty much anywhere else. Forget Taco Bell. This place is a Taco Bell killer. The burritos are huge, you pick them up they have heft! We tried a fajita quesadilla as well and I asked my wife ” how do you eat this thing?” As it was so full. But that fajita quesadilla might be the tastiest of them all. Delish.

We decided after our second trip that we just have to start ordering less and sharing more. Every time we leave here, we are stuffed to the gills.

If you order a platter, instead of giving you 3 small steamed tortillas like the typical Mexican restaurant, they give you one huge super burrito sized tortilla all nice and wrapped up for you, giving you the option to make yourself one mega burrito out of your platter or tear and share as you see fit. I kinda love that.

The ala carte tacos are stuffed and great. These aren’t your tiny, delicate street tacos.

The tamales are tasty and much smokier than I imagined they might be.

They offer a wind range of menu options and even more traditional Mexican meats like beef tongue or cheek.

They serve breakfast all day, and if you’re hankering for a breakfast burrito, you won’t find one better or more worth the price.

I have seen other reviews comment that this place seems less spicy or more bland and I can see that, the meats do seem a good bit less heavy on cumin than typical, but you can always kick that up with the very tasty salsas.

All-in-all, we are so glad they opened, this is going to be a regular place for us to be sure!

It was okay. I didn’t care for the cheddar mix cheese on the chimi. I would have preferred it with just white cheese or no cheese at all. The chimi was huge, but the filling seemed to be layers of the tortillas and less meat. The meat was delicious in the beef chimi. The rice was good but dry. Again, I would prefer the beans without cheddar on it. I will try it again with a couple of changes to my order.

We’ve been waiting for this to open as we drive by every day. So we went! We were there mid afternoon and the place was quiet but the service was pleasant (counter ordering, then served to the table) and the food was FRESH and tasty!

First, the chips were spot on! So warm, just the right amount of oil still left with good amount of salt. There’s a small salsa bar available to choose your sauces and the classic salsa was really well seasoned, not bland. The guac was of the smooth blended variety, but still had great flavor.

The style is slightly different from the 3 other fave Mexican places within 1/2 mile, and that’s good, in my opinion. We got fish tacos with rice and beans which were PLENTY for a meal, and they did them well, fried fish, pico, a great creamy sauce in there, no settling for boring plain lettuce and cheddar cheese toppings like several places locally. It was more of a Baja feel and satisfied for sure. We also had the chicken fajitas combo, and they were also seasoned quite well. We didn’t realize they had shredded cheese on top, and my daughter doesn’t like cheese, so we’ll definitely ask for that to be left off next time, but she still ate what she could.

Beans and rice can make or break, and these were flavorful and of very nice consistency. The place was nice and clean, simple but effective decor inside.

We’ll be back, for sure! Go check it out!

My husband ordered pick up. Staff was nice but all of his food was inedible.. chicken smelled like came straight out of the can. Smelled like dog food. YUCK, burrito barely had any chicken in it & it had all extra ingredients in it that he didn’t request. He ordered, chicken tacos, chicken buritto & a chicken quesadilla.. straight to the trash. First & last time visiting there.

I have been wanting to try this place for a long time. I dont know if it was an off night but everything sucked food wise. It was beyond bland, no flavor. The rice was chunky and very dried out. The soda maching had zero carbination. The mens bathroom was falling was falling apart. However, dining room was very clean and nice staff. But for over $70 we will not be returning.

As a native San Diegan of 17 years, I’ve been hard-pressed to find any kind of Mexican food that reminded me of home. Abelardos is the first genuine Mexican that I’ve had since moving to Missouri seven years ago that brought me right back to Chula Vista. The California burritos and carne asada fries (called Super Fries here) are phenomenal, and this is the only place I’ve been able to find them in the Midwest. Give them a shot. You will NOT be disappointed.

Everything was so amazing!!! Everything was so fresh that you could taste it. Value for the money is awesome! The salsa was unique and really good! I got the street tacos, and was not expecting FIVE TACOS! Most places only give you 3! And I normally don’t get enough lime to my tastes, but they put plenty! My husband loved his enchiladas, too! I’m very impressed. Also, I thought Google might have been wrong about them being open til 3am on a Saturday night, but nope! We went at 2 am! Just such a unique place!
