The menu is really half French and half German. It was very good but by no means the best German food I’ve had. The potato pancakes were amazing. Hubby had an Old Fashion which he said was excellent, I had an amaretto sour that could have used some more spirits. The slow cooked spare ribs were very tender.

Roast Rack of Lamb was outstanding!!! Best I have ever had. Generous portion too with 8 chops. Also French Onion soup and chocolate cake were both delicious. Wonderful choice for celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary!

My boyfriend and I came here and had a great time! Our dinner was delicious, and our server was excellent. My boyfriend ordered roasted duck – delicious! My halibut was cooked to perfection! Really romantic setting. Very European. Not easy to find good German food! Compliments to the chef! I love a light dessert, and my flourless chocolate mousse was so yummy – especially the crust.

We stopped while on vacation to have dinner at Alfred’s. Hands down the best meal we have had our entire trip. Food was fabulous! Sat at the chefs table and not only got a wonderful meal but a great show. It was neat to see the choreography of the chef working and all the little details that go into making our meals. This place is a go to for both visitors and locals alike. I heard a local mention how he loves bringing guests to Alfred’s because the food is always amazing. Staff was pleasant and attentive to our needs. Will certainly be back.

The Chef’s Table, actually a counter, at Alfred’s was the ideal spot to appreciate the skill and concentration that goes into the making of a fine meal. Chef Heath is clearly a master at the top of his game and he and his sous-chef orchestrated superb meals for a small but full restaurant. Pity it was too cool and windy to enjoy one of their fine outside tables. We were there for the penultimate day of the Hilton Head Island Restaurant Week and we were glad that they managed to squeeze us in. But what about the food. Well, being raised by a fine German mother I think I know something about genuine German food and their Restaurant Week’s special menu’s Sauerbraten and rot kohl (red cabbage) with spaetzle were right on the mark! Outstanding-well starred but tender, pullable-apart beef with sauce so delicious that just I had to ask for a second portion — not that the first portion was chintzy but I guess I am just a sauce kind of guy. But I would do the menu a disservice if I did not also mention that the rot kohl was probably even better and more tasty than my mother’s. Just the right balance of tang and sweetness on perfectly soft finely sliced and very tender red cabbage. Then the spaetzle were just the right side to complement the tasty sauerbraten as well’s to sop up the extra sauce. My wife’s meal of a trout filet, flambéed right before our eyes, over mashed potatoes and grilled zucchini leaves with beurre blanc was also excellent she reported.
Out of sequence in my description was our observing the kitchen’s evening startup which involved baking fresh dinner rolls and preparing a stack of potato pancakes – sure to be gone well before the evening ended. The Alfred’s wine list offered us many well selected choices and we certainly appreciated the Paso Robles and Napa wines we picked. Then, however, I just had to have one of those tempting potato pancakes as my appetizer while my wife greatly enthused that her herb and mushroom soup first was the best she ever had. The postscript to our delightful meal was apple strudel for me and ice cream for my gluten intolerant wife. FYI the Chef and menu were fully prepared for this contingency.
We left the friendly service and outstanding food shared by this European enclave well satisfied.

Have heard about Alfred’s from family members and friends on the island for several years now and we finally decided to go for a nice dinner on a Tuesday evening. We were not disappointed from the recommended wine to the fresh rolls, the salad, the French onion soup, and the main courses, the filet and the short rib. We also got a dessert to go and they did it nicely with a candle lit for us to blow out before we left. Thanks Will! The rolls were some of the best I have ever had, the soup was up there as well! Definitely a hidden gem on the island for a nice dinner. We sat at one of the outside tables and it was great, more quiet than being inside if you want more intimate conversation. Everything was really top notch.

Great food as usual. Wife got the halibut special, I always get the German sampler (bratwurst, short ribs and pork schnitzel), son got the schnitzel. All delicious. For dessert we shared the chocolate mousse cake and cheesecake. Both delicious. Service was great.

Alfred’s never disappoints, because they are always on point. I ordered the German Potato Pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce as an appetizer. For our entrees, my wife ordered the Chilean Sea Bass, with whipped potatoes, and sautéed spinach. I ordered the Potato crusted Halibut with sautéed spinach. The fish and accompaniments were cooked to perfection. We’re still trying to figure out the secret to that delicious spinach. We each ordered the Apple Strudel with vanilla ice cream for dessert, however, it may have been cooked a bit too long, so we had to return it. They made it up to us by bringing out another dessert, which was the Hummingbird cake bread pudding, which was deliciously sweet and tasty. We’re looking forward to our next visit to Alfred’s!

This is the second time I have been here, and still enjoy the dinner. The food is excellent, but if you are here in warm weather (this time it is in the 40s farenheit), try to get a table outside to keep the noise level under control.
Half the food is German themed and this is the side of the menu most of our family went for. The other half was more generic continental menu but still worth pulling off of.
The kitchen is small, so expect delays if you have a large party. And get reservations if you can.
Wonderful change from the generic seafood restaurant.
