NEW OPERATORS 11/25 and expanded dining room with FULL BAR. This matters regarding some older reviews.

We’ve lived in Avery 4 years and we’ve almost gone here for breakfast a few times, but never went before today (2/25/26) and decided to try it for dinner.

I’ll be honest when the inital operators opened under the current name, the first special I saw was soup beans for $12.99. I was offended.

We went tonight expecting sandwiches, burgers and salads – instead we were so pleasantly surprised.

First of all, there are now three sections to the restaurant – they occupy the whole building. I was so amazed by the setting that I was sending pictures to friends as soon as we were seated.

There is the main “cafe” area that most are familiar with (think clean, simple, 50s diner) and two “lounge” areas. One by the bar with a 5 top vintage card table, sofa and the room nearest the motel, which is akin to an Olde English “Pub Den”.

We sat at the 4 top by the window in the latter.

We had a few beers (great selection of bottles and cans) and the house pomegranate margarita and an old fashioned.

These were “fine dining” quality cocktails.

The sausage ball app was very good. Not your grandmas sausage balls (with baking mix and cheese) but more like crispy sausage meatballs topped with pickled onions and a cream sauce.

She has the Fish and Chips. Light white fish in a tempura batter with CRINKLE CUT FRIES! (why does everyone else mess with perfection!) and the most amazing malt vinegar infused aioli.

I had the 10 oz, hand cut ribeye with fingerling potatoes and house salad.

I normally never get a ribeye this small because of thickness. (And yes, it was on the thin side) but it was perfectly seasoned with blackening spices and cooked to perfection (med rare).

Jennifer (chef wife, front of house) served us and she was simply amazing. We hugged at the end. She’s a mtn girl from WVA and was so pleasant and attentive – but also very polished and an amazing bartender.

She even shared a failed dessert with us (pot de creme – sugar granules didn’t dissolve all the way – that they chose not to offer that night because it wasn’t to their standards) and as I told her, most places would have served it and it would have been well received.

Our check was surprisingly reasonable – and I couldn’t have been happier with the entire experience.

Give this place a chance, we’re blessed to have them and we will be back!

Had the beans and rice with sausage, chicken and shrimp. It was true southern cooking and great food. The bar had good spirits and the staff was awesome. I highly recommend this place anytime in Newland or the surrounding area. Suzanne and Nathan are great owners. We will definitely be back!

First time, glad we did. Food was good but skip the cheddar on the pimento dip.. it was greasy enough. Serve 2 pitas with, 1 wasn’t enough. Cocktails were good. Add good cherry to your ol’ fashions. Harvest salad was killer, stuck my head in kitchen to compliment chef, great mix of flavors. Fish n chips were good but needed side tartar. Step up fry game to a double fried or truffle fry… Will be back, lounge looks great will stop in there first. Nice to see Newland step up food game keep up the hard work.

Highly recommend Waightstill’s Restaurant & Tavern for a memorable dining experience. I’ve attended two of their monthly Supper Club events, and each time the offerings have been exceptional. The quality, creativity, and presentation of the food and custom cocktails have been truly impressive.

The staff is top notch, consistently friendly, attentive, and accommodating. It’s clear they take great pride in both their service and their culinary offerings.

I look forward to future Supper Club events with their creative themes!

I stopped here for Sunday lunch during the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and sat at the counter. Both ladies working were so, so kind (epitome of Southern hospitality), the food was delicious, and it was great to see all the regulars come in after church; they knew both ladies & vice versa. Such a great vibe, I highly recommend anyone stop by for breakfast or lunch when they’re in this part of North Carolina.

The coffee is good. The service is excellent. My mashed potatoes and fried chicken was all made from scratch and it was delicious. Very clean and cute facility. I am so happy to have this addition in town. I will be back!

Waighstill’s has never disappointed. The Supper Club special tonight was absolutely phenomenal. It was one of, and quite possibly, the best meals that we have ever eaten. The chef is extremely talented and the staff was wonderful. I cannot say good enough things about this place. 100% recommend!

Came from out of town for a small getaway and found this spot. They were wonderful from the moment we parked our car. A lovely staff member opened the door for us and greeted us. All staff members were very attentive and made sure we were taken care of. Drinks were full and food was amazing. I recommend this place for anyone visiting that wants a nice cozy breakfast or brunch spot.

Extremely friendly service! Welcomed as soon as we walked in. Staff extremely grateful to those choosing local restaurants. Reasonable wait for appetizers and meals. Decent food and very convenient for where we were staying. The atmosphere is so nice with all the posters of local landmarks, and the tavern was so unique and fun. I’d love to stop for a drink in the tavern space next time I’m in the area. Would definitely stop here again.

I order the hash brown bowl and a side of cheddar cheese grits and I was pleasantly surprised. My husband ordered a traditional breakfast. Friendly service.
