I’ve been meaning to stop by @babybacks_openpit on West 7 Mile/Santa Rosa on Detroits west side for some time now.
They’ve been in business for 9 years and are doing well through these hard times. Hell, making it through the Covid year is testament to their service and food quality.
Today I was met by a young man who’s family owns the business. He was about as friendly as a person can be. He graciously answered my questions without hesitation. BTW his recommendation is the chicken here which I didn’t get this time. But it sure looked great in the window.
I opted for a 1/2 rack of babybacks. As for my sides I opted for Mac’n Cheese and Cabbage. They were out of potato salad being late in the day. But cabbage is always a win for me.
The ribs are sauced up proper and are charred on the top. As babyback ribs should be they have some chew/pull to them and dont just fall off the bone. Contrary to popular belief falling off is overcooked. These were not over done they were spot on. The smoke and charred flavor hit deep with their homemade sauce. Its a runny sauce but very rich with flavor and a bit of sweetness. A good balance here.
The Mac was cheesy, had solid flavor and can taste the salt/pepper and garlic in the cheese. The noodles were not over or under done. Great execution here as well.
The cabbage was a homerun all day. It has potato slices in it and a solid stewed sauce. Im going to smash this after my post. Ill pay for it later but thats worth it with the flavor.
The flavors of everything is on point folks. But the service was exceptional. I didn’t get your name bro but keep at it!
NEXT TIME I’m going to try their chicken and some Ox Tail. Yes a BBQ place with some ox tails. Why? They’re a soul food BBQ place.
They also have meatloaf (not my jam never was) but people love it so try it. It did look good.
Pricing is not bad. In fact it is on the cheaper side of area BBQ places in Detroit. Big plus because the ribs and 2 sides are in my top spot so far.
Please go check them out. They’re next to the State Farm insurance company in the building.

The dressing was great—Turkey was inside, flavorful and moist! That’s what I came for. I enjoyed the Carmel cake, too. It was enough to save for later. The texture of the greens were good and they weren’t seasoned with a lot of salt. That allowed me to season it the way I wanted. (I added my own cranberry sauce.)

Everything was delicious! I had the fried pork chop and short rib dinners with dressing, greens, dirty rice and baked beans. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. It was a good experience and they’re pretty fast too! I waited maybe 20 minutes at the most (the pork chops were fried fresh). They were out of ribs, rib tips, catfish, sweet potatoes and mac & cheese (after 6pm on Mother’s Day so not a surprise). I recommend going earlier for the best selection of soulfood. I appreciate good seasoning on good flavors with great customer service! I will be back ❤️ We smashed alll the food so no pics but I did make my way back to my favorite dessert, Peach Cobbler. It’s good, but I was sad to learn that there were more apples than peaches in it. It does taste more like peach cobbler than apple pie though.

I decided to stop here on the way home from work for some carry-out. Got a half oder of rib-tips and was not disappointed! Quick and easy service when there aren’t too many people ordering. Delicious BBQ sauce and plenty of sides to choose from. The people working behind the counter made me feel right at home. 10/10 would recommend to any Detroiter.
