A quiet and peaceful, yet familiar, space. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. The food was excellent; my maki roll and miso soup were especially so. Their bentos are an absolute steal. I’d definitely recommend!

Really cute spot and amazing service. Sushi was good but nothing extraordinary.

I’ve been coming here for years, this place never disappoints. Sushi is very fresh and delicious (my personal favorite is the dragon roll: eel & avocado). Bento boxes are a good value and great for takeout too. Quick service and knowledgeable staff. I highly recommend sitting by the window to watch the crowds on Newberry street. Overall, great fresh food at a reasonable price especially for this area. I will continue to come back! (P.S. street parking is free after 8 pm and on Sundays)

The restaurant has a very nice setup where you can dine on a cute porch (inside) and, through its windows, you get really nice views of the street. I have to say, the tempura shrimp is the best I’ve ever had. So crispy, fluffy, perfectly cooked and not oily at all! The edamame were good and the steamed vegetable dumplings were really good too. The makis were good but the options they have aren’t the usual maki options you see in other restaurants and I feel like I would have enjoyed the usual options more than the ones they offer. The fish tasted really fresh though!

Umai is a sushi & Japanese cuisine spot located in the heart of Newbury Street, with a nice comfy interior and some spots in the windows aimed out towards the street for eating and viewing.
The staff were pretty welcoming and quick with service, ensuring that the food came out quick. The food was a bit on the expensive side for the portion, but is passable because it is located on Newbury Street.
I got the lunch combo with spicy salmon and spicy california. It came served with miso soup and salad. Miso soup was pretty standard, and the salad had a nice dressing and was fresh. The spicy salmon was rolled nice, was fresh, and wasn’t too fishy. The spicy california was a California roll with the spicy mayo on top, which was alright, the spicy mayo was good but nothing too outstanding.
Overall, a good spot for sushi in Newbury Street, good for a chill lunch or casual date.

I got the lunch special which was a good price for two simple rolls, soup and salad. I enjoyed the eel/avo and the spicy Cali roll. I later ordered a milk mango Boba tea with chewy Boba. It was not good. Not enough mango powder so it already tasted watered down, and some of the Boba were so hard it was difficult to chew. So they were obviously hard. I would recommend the sushi 100%, but tell you to stay away from the Boba.

Umai is our go-to sushi spot, and it never disappoints! The sushi here always hits the spot, especially the special makis, which we love ordering. The atmosphere and service are both excellent, making it a perfect choice for our date nights. We particularly enjoy sitting in the window seats, as it really enhances the overall experience. If you’re looking for delicious sushi in a great setting, I highly recommend Umai!

Nice little environment. Service was good and food was delicious and served quickly. Only thing I noticed was that the takoyaki didn’t have the Japanese mayo on it but was still good though. Will recommend and go to again.

Great food and okayish service. I ordered veggie tempura and a Newbury Maki. The tempura was the best I’ve had in awhile with Umai putting a variety of veggies in the appetizer. The Newbury Maki was good, a decent size, rice nicely cooked, and the whole thing tasted good. Loved the play with textures from the tempura pieces, salmon, avocado, and small roe.
I was surprised miso nor a small salad was served after I ordered, but maybe those are only given alongside bigger entrees, like bentos.
Service was a bit slow when I visited in the late evening (not too many customers). When I was brought the Toast machine to pay and tip, the waitress stood next to the machine watching how much I tipped, which seemed a little off to me. I’ve found most waiters will turn their heads when customers decide on a tip or aim the machine more towards the customer, so having the waitress stare down at the machine felt somewhat rude to me.
Overall, Umai was good for my first experience. I’d probably visit again only after trying a handful of other sushi places in the Boston area.
