Named after the Town Branch of the Elkhorn river, which flows alongside it, this tavern allows Barrel House Distilling Co. to showcase inventive cocktails made from their products: RockCastle Bourbon, Pure Blue Vodka, Devil John Moonshine, Devil John Dark Shine, Licking River Rye, King Solomon Rye, Oak Rum and Barrel House Rum. A selection of other spirits and a beer and wine menu is also available. The building is the original barreling house of the historic Distillery District, which began operating in 1780, and the decor reflects that rustic and historic theme, with natural wood accents and copper bar tops. This is such a neat, cool little spot! It feels like a very cozy inn or historical spot, but it doubles as a nice bar with countless bourbons, and a great cocktail selection! They even had moonshine cocktails, which feels very perfect for central Kentucky. I’ve never had a moonshine cocktail, and I was very pleased!
There was a lot of seating open, a beautiful fireplace, old photos and decor, and a nice and long bar. They even had seasonal options!!
The atmosphere was awesome and blended very well with the bar selections. The bartender was helpful and efficient. He didn’t seem to really be interested in chatting, which I do enjoy to do when it’s not busy, but it was still a good experience and he did a great job! Just letting you know in case you like to stop in new places and meet new people!
Overall, it’s a neat spot and worth checking out!!

I really wanted to love this place. From an aesthetic standpoint, it is a five-star environment, incredibly cozy, charming, and perfectly curated. The staff further elevates the experience; they are professional, welcoming, and genuinely accommodating. However, there is a jarring disconnect between the “vibey” decor and the actual dining logistics. Being served on disposable plastic trays with plastic utensils immediately stripped away the charm I was initially sold on. It felt less like a boutique dining experience and more like a high-end cafeteria, which was a significant disappointment given the potential of the space.
The Highlights: The beer cheese and deviled eggs were excellent and definitely the stars of the table.
The Letdowns: The corn muffins were unfortunately parched, crumbling into a mess upon the first bite. More disappointing was the Burgoo; it lacked the depth of flavor you’d expect, bearing a striking resemblance to a standard can of chunky beef soup.
While the staff and the “bones” of the restaurant are fantastic, the diner-style presentation and inconsistent food quality make it hard to fully recommend for a proper meal. I’d return for a drink and a snack, but I hope to see the plating evolve to match the beautiful interior.

The burgoo was good. It might need pepper. It was the best vegetable &meat stew I have had since my cousin Lamont made his vegetable beef stew one winter. Served witha side of cornbread. Also had the bread pudding THAT BOURBON GLAZE made me fall in love. I should have drank that as my dessert. I’ll be back.

The Old Guys that are still breathing chose another return visit to The Elkhart Tavern. We have been to 116 different bars and are spending 2026, so far, to return to favorites and there are a lot of them, such as this place. Love this place. The Old Guys Pub Crawl loves this place. Been here many times, but, we have been to all the bars and pubs many times.They serve beer. No need to be picky about stuff. Time is short. Say hi when you see us. We’re the old guys enjoying the day. We love this place. I have photos from all the bars we have been in and am now just getting around to posting them. So, they are not going to match each place but we don’t care. The easy chairs are great for young Jim’s bum, he says.

The meatballs in bourbon bbq sauce are delicious! Corn muffins with their corn mush are good and a neat way to incorporate the distill into the menu.

When we were there it was seat yourself and we had to go to the bar to order our food. I had mini sliders of bbq pulled pork and country ham. Both really good. My husband enjoyed his chicken salad sandwich. Corn mash muffins were good, but I prefer sweet corn muffins, so for me I would skip them next time. Had live entertainment while we ate.
