About The Russell Celebrating 20 years in downtown Hartford, The Russell is a Caribbean restaurant and lounge known for authentic island flavors, warm hospitality, and a vibrant dining atmosphere. Our menu features traditional Jamaican dishes and modern Caribbean-inspired fusion, prepared by chefs expertly trained in Caribbean cuisine. This place was amazing. They took us 45 minutes before they closed and was nice about it wasn’t in a rush or anything. The staff host Nicole is the one that said is down she was wonderful. And Chrissy was our waitress and bartender and she was just wonderful. She’s assured us that we wouldn’t be rushed eating our food so close to closing time. And she was patient. Even though we had the brunch menu I’m pretty sure during the week they have a bigger menu I will make another trip during the week. Definitely 10 out of 10

Went on a Friday night >place was dead. Sat at the bar >ordered a martini, but the base of the glass was dirty. Ordered stew chicken>food was cool with a pinch of warmth (yes a pinch of warmth). Food was bland. I needed salt and pepper but the waitress did not check back. Still ate it..out of respect.
Drink ran dry>asked for another>took the waitress 20 mins to get back to me. I asked for the check and left. First time I ever left a tip that was less than 20%.
Overall, the food, drinks, and service were lackluster and subpar. The atmosphere was nice and the music was great. The staff was nice, not rude, but slow and not attentive. The chef in the back >served cool food and bland food.
All the above is just disrespectful to the owner and I hope things change.

Great location, great service & the food is delicious. If you’re looking for all these qualities in a restaurant. I highly recommend you bring your family & friends to Russell’s. The owner of this beautiful establishment was very welcoming & made me feel as if I was back home in Jamaica with his island cuisine menu. & My favorite dessert was the rum cake & I added some grape nut ice cream on the side to go with it . This is the spot to celebrate your birthday ,anniversary. or graduation too. I will be definitely going back . Hope to see you there.

Great music and vibes, but that’s about it. Service at The Russell was nonexistent—wrong orders, lukewarm food, and 20+ minute waits for drinks in a not-too-busy restaurant, from my perspective. My oxtail plate was tough, dry, and overpriced. The bathrooms were a mess, and I’m not a fan of the “horrible” parking lot. Definitely not worth it for a group outing!

I went for Brunch on Sunday November 23,2025. It was the Worst Experience I have ever had at this establishment. First off it was $23.67 to enter so I expected better service then what I received. I felt very rushed to order my meal and when I received it I was less then impressed. I ordered fries which I was told by the waitress that they ran out and that I had two other choices (mind you brunch started at 12:00pm and we were there at 2:00 pm and they were already running out of things) I also ordered barbecue chicken wings. They looked and smelled good until it was time to bite into them and they were very hard and old. I am also a chef so I know these things. When I let the waitress know they refused to take it off the bill because I tried them. How else was I going to know what they taste like. I travel over an hour numerous times to come to this establishment and I can tell you I will not be patronizing this place ever again!!!!! They were very rude unapologetic and basically kicked us out!!!!!!!

Service was good. However the fish was salty. When I asked for the manager, the owner was there at the time. The waitress went over and told him, that a customer would like to speak with him…he totally ignored me, and never came.

This is the worst and most shocking restaurant experience I have ever had in my whole life. Our table was sat at 7 pm, we waited 2 hours and 15 minutes before the first entree came out. All entrees came out either cold, incorrect, or completely missing. Drinks were ordered and never received, which left members of my table having to reorder their own drinks from the bar. 30-40 minutes would go by without being checked on. The waitstaff was not friendly and seemed very stressed and occupied. The restaurant additionally seemed understaffed. Our table was situated by the reception area, and many people were walking in and out, brushing past our chairs and touching coats. When our table asked for a discount, we were told a manager was going to come speak with us. We then had to ask again for the manager, and it ended up being the same person we spoke to previously. We were offered a 10% discount, which our table deemed unsatisfactory due to the inadequate service. Admissions of oversights or mistakes were stated by staff but later denied and rescinded by the manager. Our table requested that the automatic gratuity be taken off, along with the 10%. The manager vehemently opposed, then attempted to guilt-trip our table by running through the gauntlet of challenges experienced by business owners and telling us that no other restaurants in the area would give more than a 10% discount for the service we received. Our waitress then agreed to remove the gratuity, and the manager again opposed and threatened to call the store owner, now yelling at the members of our table and speaking to our gross insensitivity. The manager offered either gratuity or the 10%, which we accepted, as the total of the gratuity was twice as high as the original offer. The manager then walked away, stating how she “can’t wait to see this review.” Our table was quite surprised by our experience, given the ratings and the restaurant’s popularity. We did not leave until almost 10 pm, when the restaurant was empty and the staff was cleaning. I personally have never been spoken to like that by a complete stranger in my whole life, assuming she knew everything of my character and that of the members of my table. The food is good (when served warm). However, if your experience models anything like this, quit while you are ahead, ask for the check, and do not expect an apologetic staff.
