Sushiwood in Fernie is fantastic! The tonkotsu ramen was rich and flavorful with tender chashu pork and a perfectly cooked egg. The sushi was fresh and well-prepared, especially the tuna, salmon, and crab. The hand rolls were crisp and generously filled. Drinks were also excellent — the Asahi paired perfectly with the sushi, and the Canadian Caesar really stood out. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Highly recommend Sushiwood if you’re in Fernie!

**Update: Have dined here a couple of times more (friends wanted to go). Still stand by the review on the rolls, but their hot food has become better. On more recent trips I have had their jeyuk bokkeum and tonkatsu. Both cooked well, sauce was tasty, presentation was good and worth the price. They have recently updated their physical menu and it is better organized and visually more appealing so kudos to them for improving that.**

Servers at this restaurant are very friendly and attentive and the space is neat and moderately decorated. Food is okay, definitely edible, but some dishes are overpriced. I ordered “soondubu” jjigae, a couple of different rolls and their crispy jalapeno with tuna. If you are someone that has eaten soondubu at different restaurants, please know in advance that you will not be receiving what you would normally expect. The dish is okay, but should be called “haemul jjigae” due to the lack of silken tofu pieces and a freshly cracked egg (instead, there is a sort of egg drop soup thing going on). I did ask the server about the missing tofu to which he referred to the chef who informed him that the tofu is mixed in while cooking the soup so it becomes fine. In any case, it is missing the element of what makes it soondubu jjigae. The rolls were mid, lacking any significant flavours. The jalapenos were not spicy, accompanying fried tuna had little flavour, but at least it came on a nice bed of greens. The “homemade” kimchi was salty (better left for cooking) and not crisp. All in all, not worth what I paid, even taking into account that this is located in a tourist/resort town. Thank you to the server who ensured that my dining experience, at the very least, was a pleasant one. It was a relaxed atmosphere and I did not feel rushed.

A great Japanese restaurant in Fernie! This is a spacious and comfortable restaurant serving a variety of sushi, sashimi and more! The waiters are very friendly and the service is quick and attentive. We got a party tray, which had a lot of sushi for it’s price, but unfortunately they had a bit too much rice on them in my opinion. That made for a blander taste and by the end, we were getting tired of all the rice. Other than that, the food was good and my stay here was pleasant! A small but sufficient parking lot just outside. Come check it out!

Food is amazing! I saw the reviews saying it was good but I was not expecting this good.
4 stars because there is room for improvement from the server, we asked her a few questions about some items in the menu and she just said “I don’t know” …

We stopped in on a whim as we were driving through Fernie, and boy were we pleasantly surprised!
I got a sushi box, which were all well executed, and the tempura veggies were perfect. My mom got the bulgogi, which was also very tasty (and quite a generous portion). Try the mulled tea, it was really quite delightful (I’m not sure if it’s Japanese, or just a special creation for cold apres-ski days. Regardless it was really neat orange and star anise, with lime.
Service was professional and the place was doing a brisk business.

We drove from Crowsnest Pass to go to Yamayuga, but they were closed. And we came here instead. And I am glad we did. Because we had a great meal, although it took a while for our drinks to arrived but we didn’t mine.
The service was good, food was good, portion was generous and very reasonable price. our server Ann( welcome to canada kabayan) was also attentive.place is clean as well as the washroom.
I will be coming back there again! Thank you.

Sushi wood is our favorite restaurant in Fernie! We always get the bento boxes for takeout and they are really great, then last night we ate in and had the yakisoba and ramen and it was amazing. Authentic flavours, good size portions and just delicious. Definitely give sushi wood a try if you are in Fernie!

We totally enjoyed our sushi here. The service was great. Our waiter really helped us a lot with navigating the menus. We needed help for our daughter to find things that she could have, since she can’t have gluten. With his help, she was able to try a lot of different items. It was great.

The decor was fun, relaxed and inviting. Only down side was there wasn’t much in the way of drinks. The sake was out no ciders and they didn’t have many other options for mixers with vodka. They did have some oj though, so I had a basic screw driver. Mostly oj I think….. But hey it could be a good thing that they just focused on sushi. I’ve never been served sushi so quick in my life and we ordered a lot.

Update on review – 2022

Ordered takeout for 6 adults and 3 children, Party Tray B & C.

Have to say I myself and all adults were not impressed. The rice was either undercooked or old as some of it was hard and not moist as freshly cooked sushi rice should be.

The cuts of Sashimi were mediocre at best, not very thick and not much taste either.

Rolls were ok, but slices were thin and most were falling apart due to not be rolled very well.

Not sure if they were extremely busy, (which should not matter anyway), but this particular order was under par and not what I would expect from any sushi restaurant.

Disappointing.

Sushi I Wood absolutely frequent on a regular basis!

I was pleasantly surprised with the Cherry Blossom decor and ambiance which added to my overall experience.

The service was fast and very friendly, the waitress always approached and talked to us with a smile.

The portions and quality of everything, rolls, special rolls, Nigiri, Sashimi, deep fried dumplings was amazing. Each had a very unique combination and taste. The options of Special rolls was impressive, I look forward to trying different options.

The thickness of both the Nigiri and Sashimi was perfect, nice and and thick which IMHO enhancing the flavours of the fish. Other restaurants are sliced to thin, these are great.

The overall price is on par with the other restaurants but the quality and quantity is much better and more then the others!

I would highly recommend SushiWood to anyone visiting or passing through Fernie as I am already looking forward to going back!

The restaurant is celiac friendly! If you let them know your allergy they can adjust their rolls to be gluten free. Overall the fish and service was good. Our rice was a bit dry but overall good sushi. Cute interior that would be good for a date. They also have traditional Japanese private rooms for groups. It’s Worth checking out.
