It’s great that in downtown Fredericksburg we have 2 fantastic pizza places (YMMAS and Benny’s). If you have never had deep dish you must give this a try!
(2) The pan needs to be spread generously with butter first. Once baked the crust will be like fried, crispy, golden, buttery. The crust here doesn’t look like fried, it looks more dry.
(3) UNO’s deep dish pizza is better than the recipe here. For the price YMMAS charges, I was really hoping for much more tasty authentic deep dish pizza.
Presentation:
The larger pizza was a mess when I opened the box. The entire pie had shifted to one side, causing all the cheese, sauce, and toppings to slide off and pool against the edge of the crust. It looked like it had been dropped, tilted, or slammed during delivery. On top of that, it was unevenly baked—with large burnt spots that made it even less appetizing. Honestly, it didn’t even resemble a whole pizza anymore.
Taste (or lack of):
I can’t speak much to the flavor of the larger one—because I couldn’t eat it. Between the messy collapse, the burnt areas, and the way everything was jumbled together, it just wasn’t edible. The smaller pizza was slightly better in structure, but even that had its own issues with uneven cooking and charring.
Overall Experience:
This was disappointing, plain and simple. Deep-dish should be rich, indulgent, and comforting. Instead, I ended up tossing out a good portion of the order. Not what I expected for something I was genuinely excited about.
Firstly, they’re huge! Two 14” pizzas were way more than four people could possibly eat. I’m guessing but when carrying them to my car it felt like an easy 10-12 pounds of pizza.
The amount of sauce and cheese was more than generous, and the veges and meat were also ample.
There isn’t much room to eat these onsite, so carry out is your best option. It does take a while to prepare them so allow that when ordering.
My main gripe, and it’s a personal preference, is that they scatter about 1/2 cup of what had to be Romano cheese on top. I like funky cheeses, but for some reason the added cheese kinda screwed up the flavor profile for me. Again, just my tastes. I wish it would have been Parmesan so it wouldn’t have been so funky. Very over the top.
These are best eaten fresh. It does reheat ok but the crust is best the same day.
Overall they were good, but pricey also. Start small and order up if it’s your first time. They are substantial!
