First a stop at the bar for an Old Fashioned. Nice whiskey pour, then some bottle of red stuff topped with sour soda. It wasn’t horrible but didn’t really taste like an Old Fashioned.
For appetizers we had haystack onion rings and Swedish meatballs. The onion rings were delicious, the meatballs seemed to be out of a frozen bag from Ikea.
Next they brought a sort of relish tray (see picture) and bread. The bread was warm and tasty. The relish tray was interesting. It had more meatballs, beets, coleslaw, 3 bean salad, cheese spread (for good crackers in the bread basket). Everything on the tray was fresh and good tasting.
Then came a nice dinner salad, nothing fancy but fresh. The dressings seemed homemade and had good flavor.
For dinner I had Filet and Fries Shrimp. The shrimp was outstanding, some of the best I ever had. Good size, good breading. The steak was where I was most disappointed. It had a char flavor that reminded me too much of a whopper. The meat was tender, but not a lot of flavor and didn’t melt in my mouth. It was served with au jus, maybe to add more flavor.
My friend ordered a NY Strip and a Lobster Tail. He said the Lobster Tail was prepared perfectly and he would go back just for that. He thought the strip was a little too fatty and it was good, not great.
The service was excellent, both at the bar and at the table.
I’ll go back to Dobies.
The issues unfortunately started with my Fish Fry as the fish was not fully cooked, and the batter was oozing out. I asked the server to have the kitchen fry two new pieces a little longer and the result was one over fried stringy piece of fish that still had uncooked batter oozing out. The other piece of fish was fried well with good flavor.
Oh Dobie’s we started off so strong and ended with more questions than answers. Is the fish used in the Fish Fry Frozen? Is too much batter the problem? GAH. 3.0 (5.0)
What was brought to me was basically a frozen filet you get in the bags at the grocery store. NOT an actual chicken breast. And then is was so dry when I tried to cut through it that I couldn’t without tearing it. I flipped it over and the underside was completely burnt. I sent it back. The second one was okay, but I definitely cook better chicken at home.
Though my personal experience with the food was not pleasant, everyone who got steak (steak house) was more than pleased. Raved about how good it was and the size of the cuts. Unfortunately the person who ordered salmon had to stop halfway through because of the number of bones that was in it.
The atmosphere is very nice with the old school supper club feel and the Lazy Susans for the table containing some very interesting and tasty options. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, however they will not split checks – keep in mind if going with a group.
My experience, combined with that of the others in the group, lands Dobie’s at a 3 star for me. Hit or miss depending what you order, but apparently if you’re going for steak, it’s a great option.
Very disappointed for this long awaited visit.
