Sushi was very good quality. The fish was fresh, and the way they presented their omakase set (which is pretty good value @63$ for 8 pieces) was creative and tasty. Highlights were the bluefin tuna with truffle/caviar, and the ora king salmon with truffle.
Next, the less good:
We felt rushed during our time here. We were one of the only people in the restaurant at the time, but the chef continued looking at our dishes between each course, and immediately moved us to the next course as we picked up each piece of sushi. There also wasn’t any introduction to each course, so I had to keep up myself/ask the chef. For the 8 courses (plus the extra hand roll and soup we got), our dining time was ~35 minutes, which felt a bit fast.
The lack of introduction to dishes is what brings me to my next con. During our 8 courses, I had noticed the chef skipped over one (the mackerel). I asked him if this was the mackerel, and he said it was the striped jack (the next course). I assumed he was just going out of order and would serve it later, but in the end he actually only served us 7 of the 8 courses! I asked him about this, and he said he was out of mackerel and gave me another fish instead, which I knew was not true as I had been counting/had pictures. The chef was nice about it, and gave us a piece to compensate, but I would have appreciated a bit more accountability on his end instead of playing it off as if he had served me another fish. 8 courses is already not many, so I expected more attention to detail here (especially at $8/course).
We ate at the restaurant at 8pm, and closing time was at 9pm, so this may have played a factor. I recommend coming earlier, so you can feel less rushed.
Overall the food was delicious, but service and lack of attention to detail makes me rate this 3/5.
It’s always packed so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time.
On the positive side, service was really good. Toward the end of the meal, soy sauce was accidentally spilled on someone in our party. The staff handled it with professionalism and kindness—immediately apologizing, and doing everything they could including offering to dry clean a jacket and giving gift cards. Their attentiveness and graciousness really stood out.
That said, the overall value for money just wasn’t there. We spent about $120 per person, but I didn’t have any particularly memorable or “signature” bites that justified the price point. While I truly appreciated the hospitality, I don’t think I’ll be back
The soy marinated bluefin tuna was absolutely delicious. The truffle on top had a generous amount of truffle oil, which is necessary to bring out the aromatics in contrast with the tuna. The tuna and the truffle aromatics worked very well together. The tuna was fresh , and the sushi altogether was umami.
The Japanese butter fish had a little too much wasabi on mine. not that much of a fan of this piece. It was “too clean “ and had little taste.
The Hokkaido scallop was one of the absolute best! The uni was fresh and sweet. The scallops were too. The creaminess of the Uni combined with the crunchy texture of the scallops worked very well.
The Japanese striped jack was fresh. The garnishes worked well.
The Ora King salmon had a great soft texture. The fish eggs on top worked well with the flavor and packed a great punch of umami overall. The salmon was very fresh and had great taste.
The toro taku was perfectly fatty. It was fresh.
The Japanese freshwater eel was my least favorite. The eel was very lackluster. It needs something to wake it up. I did not quite understand the craft of this piece.
The egg Castella was pretty good. it was soft and sweet.. almost like a tomago, but better taste and texture.
The ora king, salmon with truffle hand roll was delicious! The aesthetics looked amazing. The daikon’s acidity definitely helped lift the salmon and enhanced the flavors.
The Japanese firefly squid with vinegar miso
was pretty good! The squid was delicious and soft. The seaweed was clean and mellow. My only take is that the vinegar miso should not be that strong, as it will overpower the freshness of the squid and the dish.
Overall, the rice was well seasoned, and had great texture. For the most part, they put a good amount of wasabi and soy sauce into the rice, so there is no need for extra wasabi and soy sauce.
Sit at the counter if you want the Omakase to be served to you piece by piece
Will definitely revisit and recommend!
out of evening we ordered id highly recommend the omakase, wagyu tacos, o-toro handroll.
We also had the tofu which was very creamy and interesting, but not to my taste. Takowasa was addicting. My parents really liked the king salmon hand roll.
Good service. I appreciate they give baskets to put your purse under the table.
I would like to come back and sit at the bar for omakase next time, and try more uni!
