In 2008, Jonathan set upon combining spices and ingredients and, after 100 days, hence The Rub was born. The Rub is a blend of spicy, salty, sweet and savory spices all in balance, created for the passionate palette for maximum flavor. While The Rub literally refers to this special ingredient, it shares a deeper meaning; taken from Shakespeare (To be or not to be…), The Rub represents the very physical and tangible aspects of Jonathan’s restaurant, as well as the emotional connection and passion for it.
Intimate steakhouse with Italian- & American-inspired dishes, plus a cocktail bar.

Small cozy restaurant with great food and a bar. Was a little noisy but not to the point qhere were couldnt hear each other. Was easily accessible for a person with a walker. Service was fantastic. Had the double cut pork chop that was fantastic. Tender and juicy. The red fish was excellent and the chicken picata was delicious. Would recommend making a reservation through open table.

Quietly one of the best restaurants in the city.
Enjoy the vibes and food because both are top notch!!
The menu has enough variety to keep you eating here for a while.
The staff is incredible. I have nothing but good things to type about Jonathan!
Well… that’s the rub of it.

I seriously thought I was going to have a nice evening and I was in between going back to the Heights or going to Jonathan‘s. I’ve met the owner before and I’m sure he would not have been pleased with what I experienced tonight. I first started going to his restaurant when he was in that very humble beginnings of a little restaurant by the park. I just kept my mouth shut tonight. I mean seriously I get better service at McDonald’s. I purchased a filet mignon that was not as good as what I could get from a bar with a steak night contractor called meat Mojo. The filet was subpar. I patiently waited for someone to come by to refill my glass of water (that never happened). I do not partake in Alcohol consumption or sugary drinks. The server kept trying subtly to push me out the door and get me to pay while I was still eating my dinner which was irritating the heck out of me , there were many other customers watching the World Series so it’s not like I was the only one there. They’re where several other couples there. And he wanted to know twice if I was ready to pay. When it was time to leave, he throws a clear clamshell container at me and wants me to put all my food in it. I did order the broccoli with the blue cheese sauce and I had an order of brussels sprouts and an 8 ounce fillet that I still had 4 ounces left and I’m like you’re not gonna box it up for me ? what ? and I’m thinking like is this McDonald’s? why do I want to mix my blue cheese sauce with the rest of my meal when they do serve it to me separately ? so he brought out another container with a lid on it so I could put my dish in it and not spill it all over my interior of my car ….and get this. I still had to box it myself and I’m like OK I see you really don’t want a Tip do you? I still tip 20% even though the service sucks and the waiters know they give a poor performance/ service. I don’t treat people like waiters treat their guest that they stereotype may not tip ( I know what’s happening) .. I expected a lot more from this restaurant experience tonight. If I had known this, I would’ve went to Ben Berg’s restaurant steak 48 or Savoir on Yale. . Then I’m trying to figure out my bill and all it shows is this one final total amount with tax included and you don’t pay tips on Tax .it did not show an itemized bill and I just did the math in my head for 20% tip. On the pre-tax price which made me spend a little bit more time calculating a really easy bill. Yes, I’m mathematically challenged.. the waiter who checked me out asked me if I enjoyed my meal I said “mehhh it was ok ‘ which he replied. I hope you come back sir and I’m like it’s not gonna happen. I’ll give 30% tip for someone to box up my mail for me put it in the bag for me and I get a smile.. and I can get a better cut of meat over at Ben Berg‘s for the same price. With top notch service. Yes when I go out, I like to get pampered I like to get treated nice I Tip nice I’m nice to the waiters. I don’t treat them like they’re below me. This was my reward night for an exceptional week . It went very well with my new assistant at the office

I really like this restaurant. I had been to the other location on Memorial Dr. a couple of years ago, but this experience was way better. I had a seafood dish and dessert, but was with a nice size group and tried some of their items. The onion rings were outstanding, cracked pepper on the breading, the filet mignon was cooked to perfection, and tried the carrots in maple cinnamon glaze. For my entree I had the Chilean Sea Bass with Isaka sauce over a bed of spinach. Super light and tasty. For dessert I had cheesecake regular, not Nutella, really great crust and thick and creamy. My friend had Coconut, I would definitely get that next time. Our waiter Nick was super!

I’m sorry Johnathan’s I love y’all’s restaurant, and I rarely do this. But how does a cook, let a burger like this pass through the hands of a server, then to a customer. I asked for a burger Medium Well… and got a $20 raw beef patty that had been on a grill for maybe 1 minute on each side. Hadn’t eaten all day and was so hyped to get a Johnathan’s burger, I’m just glad I didn’t get the chicken.

We had a party of 12 and the dinner went well. Appetizers included bruschetta, meatballs, and dumplings both steamed and fried. All of them were decent portion size and tasted great. Chicken parm could be best in the city, chicken alfredo was very good but not served with typical fettuccine noodle, Dr pepper pork chop nice and tender, mashed potatoes on the side where good but nothing to rave about, Denver pot roast was received well with a very rich sauce, crab cakes disappeared without comment, as well as the salmon. Service was very good however I wish they could have cleared our plates faster. Overall a very good experience and we will return.

We sampled several dishes, including the Jalapeño Red Fred fish, crab cakes, mac and cheese, wedge salad, and enjoyed an old fashioned cocktail.
The Jalapeño Red Fred fish stood out with the kick from the Jalapeño that was a harmonious blend of spice and flavor. The crab cakes were generously filled with fresh crab meat, seasoned to perfection, and accompanied by a tangy remoulade that complemented them well. The mac and cheese was creamy and rich with a blend of cheeses that provided comfort in every bite.
The wedge salad was crisp and refreshing, topped with ripe tomatoes, crispy bacon, and a creamy dressing that tied all the elements together. The old fashioned cocktail was well crafted.

Dropped in for drinks and appetizers and had a nice time. The bartender was super friendly and the drinks were great. We had an aperol spritz and their strawberry mule. The bruschetta and BBQ shrimp were delicious.
